Cristina Fernandez, Argentina President, Diagnosed With Thyroid ...

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? President Cristina Fernandez has thyroid cancer, but test results showed Tuesday that it remains limited to a lobe in the right side of her neck and has not spread into her lymph nodes, her spokesman said.

Fernandez, 58, will undergo surgery on Jan. 4 and then take 20 days of medical leave, during which Vice President Amado Boudou will run the country. Meanwhile, she will keep up her normal routine, spokesman Alfredo Scoccimarro suggested, noting that she will appear at several events on Wednesday as planned.

Scoccimarro said the cancer was discovered during a routine exam on Dec. 22, and that Fernandez received the results from follow-up tests hours before the announcement.

This kind of thyroid cancer is highly survivable, with more than 95 percent of patients living at least 10 years after detection, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

The usual treatment is to surgically remove as much of the cancerous material as possible, and then follow up with radioactive iodide treatments, taken orally. This substance helps to destroy any remnants of the cancerous gland and provide for clearer images showing any additional cancer, the NIH said on its Web site.

After surgery, patients usually must take medicine ? levothyroxine sodium ? for the rest of their lives to replace a hormone that the thyroid glands produce. Blood tests every six to 12 months to measure thyroid levels also are recommended.

Fernandez is only the latest South American leader to be diagnosed with cancer. Presidents Fernando Lugo of Paraguay, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Dilma Rousseff of Brazil all have undergone treatments recently.

Presidential doctors Luis Buonomo and Marcelo Ballesteros said the operation will be led by Dr. Pedro Saco, chief of the surgery department at Hospital Austral and chief of the Head and Neck Service of the oncology institute at the University of Buenos Aires. Saco also trained in cancer centers in Houston and New York, the hospital said.

Thyroid surgery is not without risk: the NIH says a nerve that controls the vocal cords can be damaged, and doctors sometimes accidentally remove the parathyroid gland, which helps regulate blood calcium levels.

Majority of Hispanics oppose US deportation policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Fifty-nine percent of Hispanics oppose President Barack Obama's increased deportations of illegal immigrants, according to a new poll showing a weak spot in their otherwise broad support for the president in next year's election.

The survey by the Pew Hispanic Center released on Wednesday showed that just 27 percent of those polled approved of the administration's deportation policy, which immigrants' advocates have criticized as unnecessarily harsh.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported nearly 400,000 people during the fiscal year that ended in September, the largest number of removals in the agency's history. Government officials say they are targeting immigrants with criminal backgrounds.

Mark Lopez, associate director of the Pew Hispanic Center and author of the report, said that even though Hispanics reject Obama's deportation policy by a two-to-one ratio, they still support the president generally and show an affinity for his Democratic Party.

Latinos were among Obama's strongest supporters in 2008, but many have become disillusioned by the lack of employment opportunities and lack of progress on immigration reform.

The survey showed 49 percent of Hispanics approve of the job Obama is doing, down from 58 percent in 2010 but still higher than his 46 percent approval rating among the general population.

When asked which political party shows greater concern for Hispanics, 45 percent of respondents chose Democrats and 12 percent said Republicans.

Employment, education and medical care are the issues that Hispanics registered to vote in next November's presidential contest care the most about, the survey found.

Latinos have been disproportionately affected by the U.S. economy's downturn, with unemployment for the group running at 11 percent and many losing their homes. The country's average jobless rate is about 8.6 percent.

The support of Hispanic voters could prove a determining factor for Obama as he seeks re-election, especially in the critical states of Virginia, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina.

The survey was conducted between Nov. 3 and Dec. 7 in all 50 states and the District of Columbia with 1,220 adult Hispanics, 557 of whom are registered to vote.

Polling was conducted both in English and Spanish by landline and mobile telephones. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.6 percentage points for all Hispanics surveyed and 5.2 percentage points for Hispanics registered to vote.

Florida's first Trader Joe's to open in February

NAPLES, Fla --? A person at the Trader Joe's headquarters in California confirms to WINK News that it's Naples store will open February 10.

The trademark red letters have been up for weeks and now the countdown can begin. For those familiar with the chain from up north, it's exciting news.

Fran Osborn is originally from Massachusetts. She was thrilled to hear Naples will be home to Florida's first Trader Joes. "I like their products, I shopped their regularly when I lived in Massachusetts."

The Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce has had ten ribbon cuttings in less than a month and on February 10, they'll add another new business to the community.

"I think it's definitely generating conversation and peaking interest for people who aren't aware of what it's all about, so I think it will be really good for the community," says Barbara Leone of Naples.

The Trader Joes in Naples will be the first in the state of Florida. The next closest is more than 450 miles away in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. The new store will be just off US 41 and Immokalee Road in the North Naples Granada Shoppes. The hope is that all the Trader Joes traffic will boost business throughout the plaza.

Leone says, "When we lost Borders, that was a big anchor for this plaza, so to see someone big that is going to generate some business over here, I think that's wonderful."

No word yet on how many jobs this Trader Joe's will bring to the area.

Britain's Prince Philip leaves hospital (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's Prince Philip returned to the royal family's country estate Tuesday, after a spell in the hospital undergoing treatment for a blocked coronary artery.

Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's 90-year-old husband, spent four nights in the hospital recovering from a successful coronary stent procedure. He was taken to Papworth, a specialist heart hospital in Cambridge, on Friday after complaining of chest pains.

It was the most serious health scare suffered by Philip, who is known to be active and robust. He has continued to appear at many engagements, most recently taking a 10-day tour of Australia with the queen.

For the first time in years he was forced to miss the royal family's traditional Christmas festivities, which include attending a morning church service, viewing the queen's annual Christmas broadcast together, and a shooting party on Boxing Day.

Philip did not speak to reporters as he was driven away from the hospital in a Range Rover Tuesday morning, though he smiled and waved to those gathered to film his departure.

"He is very much looking forward to rejoining his family," a Buckingham Palace statement said, adding that he also thanked the hospital staff for their care.

Philip will now return to Sandringham, the queen's huge private estate in rural Norfolk where the royal family retreats for the holiday season every year.

It is not yet clear if Philip's heart problem will cause a reduction in his plans to travel with the queen next year to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. He is scheduled to make a series of trips to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to help her mark her 60th year on the throne.

Dr. Allen Schwartz, chief of cardiology at New York-Presbyterian, Columbia University Medical Center, said that an otherwise healthy 90-year-old could be expected to resume normal activity shortly after having a stent procedure.

"The treatment now would be aimed at three things: recuperation from the procedure, which is usually relatively minor, eliminating factors that might lead to a recurrence of the problem, with an appropriate diet and exercise program, and, depending on the type of stent, some medicine to reduce the chance of clotting," Schwartz said.

Now that Philip has been found to have coronary artery blockages, he is likely to be treated with several medications that are routinely prescribed for heart patients.

In most cases these medicines would include a daily dosage of aspirin to thin the blood, a statin to lower cholesterol, and possibly a beta-blocker and a separate medicine to control blood pressure. Philip would also be expected to have his heart function tested every six months or so to check for any changes.

Philip had already announced when he turned 90 that he intended to slow down his extremely active schedule. The Diamond Jubilee plans reflected this desire, with the queen deciding to send her children and grandchildren on grueling overseas trips to Commonwealth countries while she and her husband make less demanding trips throughout the United Kingdom.

Simple tips for investing in the Las vegas music scene market, a ...

In the past, making a foray into the Las vegas music scene field meant years of research and lengthly risk assessment analysis. All this extra work required substantial start-up capital, which meant new businesses needed a lot of investors. ?Now,? concludes Dineen Emerton, of the firm Francene Famulare and Partners, ?with the internet and vast array of research information available, starting up is much easier and significantly less costly. This allows us to push profits right away, and to establish a solid presence in the Las vegas music scene field quickly.? A great book on investing in the Las vegas music scene sector was written by Socorro Hardyman, a prominent author and Professor of Economics at the University of Becena Shovlin, located down town. Becena Shovlin has written some ten different works, that all deal with risk management in a dynamic economy. ?When putting your money on the table,? writes Becena Shovlin, ?be prepared for a wait of, on average, 3 - 5 years before expecting any sort of return. That is the way the Las vegas music scene market works, and with patience, you can walk with big money.? ?Las vegas music scene investing may seem daunting to some,? said Parcel Glatz, a private investor, ?but it?s really no different than the enigma of day-trading or forex. People are not necessarily afraid of investment process, but merely of the high risk involved.? Risk in the Las vegas music scene industry is certainly a factor, however, it can be mitigated by picking the right companies for your money. Picking the top company is easy, but not always the top earner. ?Sometimes,? says Stansfield Keplin, ?it?s better to look through the mid-range Las vegas music scene companies for ones with strong growth potential.? Investing money, particularly in a Las vegas music scene business, is always considered a risky move, but it can pay off dividends. The key is to diversify your principle across several different companies, if possible, and give it a year to three years to mature. ?I always tell my Las vegas music scene clients to wait at minimum 18 months before evaluating the success of a particular investment,? says Ernestina Hegg, a broker with Cornelious Urrea and Wagers Gorn Ltd, ?that way, those who get jittery early on allow themselves a chance to see the investment through. In the end, only invest what you can afford. Be prepared for the reality that your venture into the Las vegas music scene field can result in significant financial loss. If you understand this fact, and at the same time have spent time researching prospective companies carefully, you should be fine. Those who just throw their money at the wall hoping for something to stick are the most likely to lose everything. Many more average investors, like those saving for retirement, do not know about the benefits of investing in the Las vegas music scene market. ?It?s a shame that our industry isn?t seen as more main stream,? bemoaned Vilello Kuehne, CEO of Cornelia Bisel INC, ?if more main stream investors got involved through good brokerages, we?d see a higher division of risk across the board. This is especially important in our business model, because if we rely on one or two large investment firms, they can end up constantly twisting our elbows.? ?I?m thrilled to report record growth in the Las vegas music scene sector,? said Shaheed Spingola, an independent auditor, ?this signifies that anyone who invested their money more than three years ago saw a 25% return on their money - which is fabulous.? Such gains are not unhead of, particularly to Las vegas music scene related businesses, if investors can stick it out for 2-5 years. Indeed, over the past 10 years, the Joe-Regular investor has begun to see the strengths of putting money in the Las vegas music scene investment market. Ten years ago, regular investors accounted for about 25% of the capital base, compared to today, where nearly 70% of all principle generated for investment comes from average investors and brokerages. ?This change has been for the best,? declared Rhoda Bradstreet, a broker with Vath Lotti and Brothers Ltd, ?we?ve seen more people getting into investing, and more company executives doing more aggressive marketing and sales, with the knowledge that they are backed by a diverse number of share holders.?

Occupy London Spend Christmas At St Paul's

Protesters camping outside St Paul's Cathedral did not let Christmas go unnoticed - attending a morning service, eating Christmas dinner, and being treated to presents.

Members of Occupy London, who are protesting against cuts and saying ordinary people should not pay for the financial crisis, received a present from the Bishop of London, as well as other wellwishers including Radiohead.

Supporter Naomi Colvin said she and other protesters had attended a Sung Eucharist at the cathedral this morning.

"We didn't go as any sort of organised thing, just those who wanted to go," she said.
"It was really nice. We have had so many dealings with the cathedral and meet with members of the cathedral fairly often but to see it used in that setting was quite something."

She said no special mention was made of Occupy London, but there may have been some "oblique" mention as it discussed praying for the poor, and the homeless.

"The Bishop of London gave us a Christmas present - but we are waiting until later to open it," she said,

"He came out of the cathedral after the service and came to say hello to everyone and have a Christmas present.

"We've got a few presents from various wellwishers and some quite well-known people - I think Radiohead have given us one."

Earlier this month, Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke showed his support for the activists with a top secret gig with 3D of Massive Attack.

Protesters today also enjoyed Christmas dinner at the camp outside St Paul's.

"There's been a meal made, some people have come down and brought turkeys and stuff, so we still get that," Ms Colvin added.

"It's a different Christmas but it's still sort of a family Christmas in a way.

"It's been a very busy few weeks for all of us so it's a chance to sit down and relax and spend it together, like an extended family."

She said relations with the cathedral were "pretty good": "Things are quite productive, we meet them regularly to talk over things."

The campaigners have been camped in the courtyard of St Paul's since October 15. The group also occupies Finsbury Square in Islington, north London, as well as the "Bank of Ideas", an abandoned UBS-owned office block in Hackney, east London.

Other famous faces to have shown solidarity with the protesters are playwright Alan Bennett and fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, who both visited them at St Paul's.

On Friday at 6pm, Occupy London will present a reading of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol at the steps of St Paul's.

The group claims it is motivated by a similar strength of conviction over the gap between the rich and the poor as Dickens was.

Supporter James Sevitt said: "We are here, like Dickens, to creatively disrupt, and to make Christmas mean something beyond a consumerist spending frenzy.
"This Christmas, and in the year ahead, we invite you to combine irreverent fun with spiritual contemplation and a continuation of the fight against social and economic injustice and the creation of real, direct democracy. Please join us."

Texas Panhandle sees rare white Christmas

A light dusting of snow in north Texas will bring a rare white Christmas to this drought-stricken state, but the majority of the nation was seeing mild weather on Sunday.

A few snow showers were expected in parts of the Northeast as well, but weather forecasters said 99 percent of Americans would see more green and brown for their Yuletide celebrations - along with plenty of rain, according to Accuweather.com.

The wet Christmas in the Texas Panhandle and Permian Basin brought cheer for drought-weary Texans, who were seeing snow in Lubbock and Amarillo on Christmas morning and rain in the eastern part of the state.

The worst one-year drought in the state's history this year sparked devastating wildfires, killed as many as half a billion trees, and prompted the most serious urban water use restrictions ever.

Meanwhile, in points north, the lack of snow was welcome news in Minneapolis, where last year's winter storm 12 days before Christmas dumped 17 inches of snow on the city, causing the roof of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Viking's football stadium, to collapse.

This year, Minneapolis has no snow and will have temperatures in the high 30s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Very little new snow is expected to accumulate anywhere throughout the day on Sunday, according to Accuweather.com. But a snowstorm in southern Ontario is forecast to move into Quebec on Sunday night and drop snow near the Great Lakes, with some accumulation happening overnight.

Residents from Watertown, N.Y. to Bangor, Maine - many of whom are off work on Monday in observance of the Christmas holiday - could wake up to an inch of snow on the ground Monday as the storm moves East.

Most of the Pacific Northwest were seeing mild weather on Christmas Day, while states like Colorado and New Mexico had lingering snow leftover from a pre-Christmas storm. Still, very few areas across the nation were seeing fresh snow on Sunday.

Even the Texas Panhandle, which was under a winter weather advisory, was not expecting the snow to accumulate - though transportation officials were warning of ice on the roads and cautioning drivers to be careful.

Obama Needs Luck To Win In 2012

nytimes.com:

Barack Obama probably will have to pull out a familiar card next year: the luck of the draw.

In winning the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, the president defeated political heavyweights, starting with Hillary Rodham Clinton. His other triumphs were facilitated by lots of luck.

Clean Ports Act introduced in Congress mimics California program

?Legislation that would allow ports throughout the nation to mimic California?s Clean Trucks Program has been introduced in the U.S. Senate. The? ? ? ? legislation would regulate and enforce fuel-efficient truck programs that go beyond current federal mandates. It was introduced by Sen. Kirsten? ? ? ? Gillibrand (D-NY) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY).? ??

?The?Clean Ports Act of 2011 would empower port cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Newark, Oakland and Seattle to set standards, reduce emissions and improve air quality by replacing older diesel trucks with cleaner vehicles ?without imposing the burden onto truck drivers,? according to the bill?s sponsors.? ? ? ?
? ?

In Los Angeles, the clean truck program is set to permanently ban all trucks with engines made prior to 2007 from operating at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach beginning Jan. 1, 2012.? ?However, a portion of the program that would require truck companies to hire drivers as direct employees rather than contract with individual owner-operators was struck down by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th?Circuit on Sept. 26, 2011.?? ? ? ?

The Clean Ports Act of 2011, however, includes a mandate that would require port freight haulers to hire drivers as employees rather than allow them to use owner-operators. ? ? ? ?

If approved, the measure would serve as a legislative end-around for the Port of Los Angeles to finally enforce a ban on independent owner-operator? ? ? ? truck drivers as part of the $1.6 billion Clean Trucks Program, according to a report in the Daily Breeze. ? ? ? ?

The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in September tossed out the controversial mandate, which would have forced freight haulers to hire their drivers as employees. The neighboring Port of Long Beach enacted a version of the Clean Trucks Program that did not include the employee mandate. ? ? ? ?

?There?s been talk about introducing this kind of legislation all year, which shows they were expecting to lose this case in court,? said Curtis Whalen of the American Trucking Assns, which filed a lawsuit against the Port of Los Angeles shortly after the Clean Trucks Program went into effect three years ago. ??

?There?s no way this will pass in a Republican-controlled House,? Whalen told the Breeze. ?This is likely a maneuver to get the?Teamsters and all the other unions to have something to rally around at the end of the year.??

Approximately 95% of the nation?s 110,000 port trucks fail to meet Environmental Protection Agency emissions ?standards, according to legislation sponsors. According to EPA estimates, poor air quality impacts 87 million people who live and work near U.S. ports.?

?Congress must act to provide New York, and cities all across the country, with the common-sense tools they need to improve the quality of air? ? ? ? and quality of life for millions of people,? said?Gillibrand, a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee. ?It?s time to update federal laws and allow our nation?s ports to help reduce diesel emissions and improve air quality for all New Yorkers by putting clean trucks on the road.? ??

?With this bill, New Yorkers who live in and near the working waterfront will be able to breathe a little easier knowing that Congress has provided the tools to ensure that the thousands of trucks on their roads are using the latest in clean technology,? said Schumer. ?This is a common-sense initiative that will improve public health without diminishing economic activity in our port. I look forward to pushing hard for it in ?the Senate.? ? ??

??The Clean Ports Act is a critical modernization of federal law that would dramatically improve the quality of air for the 87 million Americans ?who live and work near major container ports,? said?U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY),?the House sponsor of the legislation. ?It is indefensible that ports are being challenged from enforcing clean truck programs to replace highly polluting and outmoded diesel trucks. Such pollution profoundly increases rates of asthma, cancer and heart disease and contributes to a growing public health crisis across the nation. I am thrilled that Senator Gillibrand has joined this important campaign to clean up our ports and protect Americans from unnecessary pollution.??

Earlier this year, Nadler, a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, re-introduced the House version of the bill. ?

More than 150 civic, environmental, labor, business, and civil rights groups, including the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, Change to Win, American Stevedoring, Inc., BlueGreen Alliance, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Sierra Club, Apollo Alliance, and Natural Resources Defense Council, support the?Clean Ports Act. ? ?

BlueGreen Alliance Executive Director David Foster called the bill ?a simple way? the federal government can help local governments cut ?emissions, boost green jobs, improve public health and help responsible businesses grow during economic recovery.? ? ? ?

PFT: Steelers to sit Roethlisberger, start Batch

Test+Pattern

Six of the Cincinnati Bengals? seven home games this season will be blacked out locally.? One of the two U.S. Senators from Ohio believes that number should be zero.

But not because he believes all non-premium tickets should be purchased for the games at Paul Brown Stadium.? Senator Sherrod Brown believes that the NFL should abandon the policy that requires non-sellouts to be blacked out in the local market.

?The NFL?s blackout policy is unnecessary,? Brown said in a statement, via USA Today.? ?The NFL is poised to earn record profits while the Cincinnati taxpayers who built the stadium will be watching reruns rather than touchdown runs.? The rule is an outdated relic that doesn?t serve the NFL or the fans.?

Brown also pointed out that the league?s new broadcast TV contracts reflect a 60-percent increase over prior amounts paid by the networks.? Thus, Brown believes that the league shouldn?t hinge the decision to televise a team?s home games upon the team?s ability to sell tickets.

The league, not surprisingly, defends the blackout policy, which was adopted in 1973.? (Prior to that, home games simply weren?t televised at all in the local market, with or without a sold-out stadium.)

?The blackout policy is very important in supporting NFL stadiums and the ability of NFL clubs to sell tickets, keeping our games attractive as television programming with large crowds; and ensuring that we can continue to keep our games on free TV,? NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement to USA Today.? ?Playing in full stadiums with thousands of fans is an important part of what makes NFL football an exciting and special entertainment event, both live and on television.? We have a limited number of games and do not want to erode the incentive to buy tickets.? Every market receives more than 100 NFL games on free TV every year, regardless of the blackout policy.?

That?s fine, but in this day and age how many people actually buy tickets to the local team?s home games due to a concern that, if they don?t, they won?t be able to see the game at all?? There will always be people who choose to attend games, and there will always be people who choose to stay home and watch whatever other game they can find on TV, or simply wait for the highlights.

The challenge for the league is to entice enough people in every market to choose to pay to attend the games.? And that means finding ways to make the in-stadium experience better (or, in the case of controlling the behavior of drunks and/or idiots and/or drunken idiots, not as bad).

It also means setting price points that will ensure a full stadium, based on the dynamics of each market.? In some places, it could mean building smaller stadiums.? While it?s indeed preferable to broadcast games with a full house of fans in the background, non-sellouts are still televised in other markets, regardless of whether the stands are full or empty.

So maybe Senator Brown is right.? Maybe the time has come to abandon the blackout policy.? As the rule approaches its 40th birthday, the only thing we know is that the blackout policy should at least be fully scrutinized, given that the manner in which folks consume video content has changed dramatically in the past four decades.

The winner of 'The X Factor' is ...

By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

Michael Becker / FOX

Melanie Amaro was crowned the first "X Factor" champ on Thursday night.

Melanie Amaro was crowned the winner of ?X Factor? on Thursday, surprising almost nobody and completing the journey that nearly ended before it began.

Amaro famously wasn?t one of judge Simon Cowell?s original four female finalists, but got called back into the competition when he either changed his mind or decided that the charade had gone on long enough, depending on how cynical you are. Once she got that second chance, she immediately became the favorite among the women, sailing through the competition and earning the $5 million recording contract.

She fell to her knees in prayer after hearing the news, overwhelmed enough to resist host Steve Jones? numerous attempts to get something resembling a sound bite out of her. She choked up several times during her show-closing number, but presumably will recover in time to record what everyone at Fox hopes?will be?a monster album that sells millions of downloads.

Josh Krajcik, the former burrito maker and champion of the 30-somethings, came in second, with Chris Rene having been eliminated earlier in the evening as the third-place finisher.

The result capped an evening that was more of a holiday special than a coronation. The three finalists all sang Christmas tunes, as did Justin Bieber in a duet with Stevie Wonder. Bieber than sang a few notes with Drew, the teenager eliminated earlier in the competition who auditioned with Bieber?s ?Baby? and seemed as overwhelmed by the opportunity as any girl her age would.

?She is a very special girl and she will go far,? Bieber said, though he did not indicate that he was prepared to fulfill Drew?s fantasy of a date with him at the beach.

The show also featured the snippets of interviews with friends and family members that tug at the heartstrings and are a staple of all reality competitions, or so it seems.

?We used to complain about you singing all the time, and now look at you singing in front of millions of people,? Amaro?s brothers said.

?I?m not really surprised we?re here right now. I want you to know that I love you so much, and I don?t think I say that enough,? said Krajcik?s daughter.

The night also saw the rivalry between Simon and judge?L.A. Reid depicted as a battle of heavyweights, while judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Adbul had the ?Cry-Off? clip show instead. This concept was brought to you by the 1950s, which wants its gender roles back.

Rachel Crow made her return, two weeks after her elimination in what was called the most shocking moment of the season. She didn?t seem to have any lingering scars from that experience.

?I?m gonna steal your job,? she told Steve.

It was a tough night for the host in general, who was often stymied in his attempts to talk with the contestants and had Nicole whiff on a punchline several times before he finally threw up his hands and gave up.

Other acts included 50 Cent, who tested the Fox censors and was accompanied by some of the less-heralded members of the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as Ne-Yo and Pitbull. Also singing was Leona Lewis, who won the British version of the show and is what the folks at Fox are desperately hoping that Amaro becomes. That, as much as anything else, will determine whether this becomes the next ?American Idol? or just one of the countless shows stuck in its wake.

Did the right contestant win?

NASA's Cassini delivers holiday treats from Saturn

ScienceDaily (Dec. 23, 2011) ? No team of reindeer, but radio signals flying clear across the solar system from NASA's Cassini spacecraft have delivered a holiday package of glorious images. The pictures, from Cassini's imaging team, show Saturn's largest, most colorful ornament, Titan, and other icy baubles in orbit around this splendid planet.

The release includes images of satellite conjunctions in which one moon passes in front of or behind another. Cassini scientists regularly make these observations to study the ever-changing orbits of the planet's moons. But even in these routine images, the Saturnian system shines. A few of Saturn's stark, airless, icy moons appear to dangle next to the orange orb of Titan, the only moon in the solar system with a substantial atmosphere. Titan's atmosphere is of great interest because of its similarities to the atmosphere believed to exist long ago on the early Earth.

The images are online at: http://www.nasa.gov/cassini , http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov and http://ciclops.org .

While it may be wintry in Earth's northern hemisphere, it is currently northern spring in the Saturnian system and it will remain so for several Earth years. Current plans to extend the Cassini mission through 2017 will supply a continued bounty of scientifically rewarding and majestic views of Saturn and its moons and rings, as spectators are treated to the passage of northern spring and the arrival of summer in May 2017.

"As another year traveling this magnificent sector of our solar system draws to a close, all of us on Cassini wish all of you a very happy and peaceful holiday season, " said Carolyn Porco, Cassini imaging team lead at the Space Science Institute, Boulder, Colo.

More information about Cassini mission is online at http://www.nasa.gov/cassini and http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov .

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging team is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.
