Nexus 4 returns to Google Play store in Canada at 3PM Eastern today

It certainly hasn't been the easiest phone to get a hold for for those interested, but those in Canada now at least know when they'll have another chance to grab a Nexus 4. Google's today sent out emails informing prospective customers that the phone will again be available in the Canadian Play store starting at 3PM Eastern (noon Pacific time), although it's of course making no guarantees about quantities. It also hasn't specified if both the 8GB and 16GB models will be available, but there's now less than an hour 'til we find out.

Complex chemistry within the Martian soil: No definitive detection of organics yet

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? NASA's Mars Curiosity rover has used its full array of instruments to analyze Martian soil for the first time, and found a complex chemistry within the Martian soil. Water and sulfur and chlorine-containing substances, among other ingredients, showed up in samples Curiosity's arm delivered to an analytical laboratory inside the rover.

Detection of the substances during this early phase of the mission demonstrates the laboratory's capability to analyze diverse soil and rock samples over the next two years. Scientists also have been verifying the capabilities of the rover's instruments.

Curiosity is the first Mars rover able to scoop soil into analytical instruments. The specific soil sample came from a drift of windblown dust and sand called "Rocknest." The site lies in a relatively flat part of Gale Crater still miles away from the rover's main destination on the slope of a mountain called Mount Sharp. The rover's laboratory includes the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite and the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument. SAM used three methods to analyze gases given off from the dusty sand when it was heated in a tiny oven. One class of substances SAM checks for is organic compounds -- carbon-containing chemicals that can be ingredients for life.

"We have no definitive detection of Martian organics at this point, but we will keep looking in the diverse environments of Gale Crater," said SAM Principal Investigator Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Curiosity's APXS instrument and the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on the rover's arm confirmed Rocknest has chemical-element composition and textural appearance similar to sites visited by earlier NASA Mars rovers Pathfinder, Spirit and Opportunity.

Curiosity's team selected Rocknest as the first scooping site because it has fine sand particles suited for scrubbing interior surfaces of the arm's sample-handling chambers. Sand was vibrated inside the chambers to remove residue from Earth. MAHLI close-up images of Rocknest show a dust-coated crust one or two sand grains thick, covering dark, finer sand.

"Active drifts on Mars look darker on the surface," said MAHLI Principal Investigator Ken Edgett, of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego."This is an older drift that has had time to be inactive, letting the crust form and dust accumulate on it."

CheMin's examination of Rocknest samples found the composition is about half common volcanic minerals and half non-crystalline materials such as glass. SAM added information about ingredients present in much lower concentrations and about ratios of isotopes. Isotopes are different forms of the same element and can provide clues about environmental changes. The water seen by SAM does not mean the drift was wet. Water molecules bound to grains of sand or dust are not unusual, but the quantity seen was higher than anticipated.

SAM tentatively identified the oxygen and chlorine compound perchlorate. This is a reactive chemical previously found in arctic Martian soil by NASA's Phoenix Lander. Reactions with other chemicals heated in SAM formed chlorinated methane compounds -- one-carbon organics that were detected by the instrument. The chlorine is of Martian origin, but it is possible the carbon may be of Earth origin, carried by Curiosity and detected by SAM's high sensitivity design.

"We used almost every part of our science payload examining this drift," said Curiosity Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "The synergies of the instruments and richness of the data sets give us great promise for using them at the mission's main science destination on Mount Sharp."

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess whether areas inside Gale Crater ever offered a habitable environment for microbes. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

If Obama did not offer the Joint Chiefs post, Petraeus should resign from the military and run for president, Ailes suggested.

UCI names 3-member panel to probe Armstrong links

GENEVA (AP) ? British judge Phillip Otton will chair the three-member panel investigating the International Cycling Union's links to the Lance Armstrong doping case.

The UCI, cycling's governing body, announced the independent commission on Friday, saying British Paralympic great Tanni Grey-Thompson and Australian lawyer Malcolm Holmes also will serve on the panel that will meet in London from April 9-26 and issue a report by June 1.

"The appointment of these three eminent figures demonstrates clearly that the UCI wants to get to the bottom of the Lance Armstrong affair and put cycling back on the right track," UCI President Pat McQuaid said in a statement.

Otton's sports legal cases include a Premier League relegation dispute involving Carlos Tevez, and Chelsea's tactics in trying to lure Ashley Cole from Arsenal.

Grey-Thompson is a 10-time Paralympic gold medalist in wheelchair racing who is now a lawmaker in the upper chamber of Britain's Parliament.

The UCI asked Court of Arbitration for Sport board president John Coates to help create a panel to investigate suspicions raised by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's damning report into widespread doping by Armstrong's teams during his seven Tour de France victories from 1999-2005.

Armstrong was stripped of seven Tour de France titles and banned for life.

McQuaid said the UCI had no part in choosing the three officials, who have drawn up the parameters for their investigation, which could be a key to rebuilding ? or wrecking ? the governing body's damaged credibility.

The commission will closely scrutinize McQuaid, who was elected as UCI president weeks after Armstrong first retired in 2005, and his predecessor, Hein Verbruggen, in their working relations with Armstrong.

The governing body denies claims made by former Armstrong teammates to USADA that it covered up suspicious samples from Armstrong in exchange for cash, or that the American rider enjoyed special protection.

"The commission's report and recommendations are critical to restoring confidence in the sport of cycling and in the UCI as its governing body," McQuaid said. "We will cooperate fully with the commission and provide them with whatever they need to conduct their inquiry and we urge all other interested stakeholders to do the same."

The UCI pledged to fund the commission's work and will be legally represented at the London hearings. It did not say whether the sessions will be held in public or behind closed doors.

"The costs of the independent commission will be a significant burden on the UCI," McQuaid said. "However, it is clear that only such a decisive and transparent examination of the past will answer our critics by thoroughly examining our assertion that the UCI's anti-doping procedures are and have been among the most innovative and stringent in sport."

The panel will examine whether the UCI's doping rules "were inadequate or were not enforced with sufficient rigor"; if the UCI had "any reliable evidence or information" that Armstrong was doping; and if it "adequately cooperated with, assisted in and reacted to the USADA" investigation.

A potential conflict of interest between the UCI's role promoting the sport and its duty to police anti-doping will also be examined.

A multi-wavelength view of radio galaxy Hercules A

Spectacular jets powered by the gravitational energy of a super massive black hole in the core of the elliptical galaxy Hercules A illustrate the combined imaging power of two of astronomy's cutting-edge tools, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, and the recently upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico.

Some two billion light-years away, the yellowish elliptical galaxy in the center of the image appears quite ordinary as seen by Hubble in visible wavelengths of light. The galaxy is roughly 1,000 times more massive than the Milky Way and harbors a 2.5-billion-solar-mass central black hole that is 1,000 times more massive than the black hole in the Milky Way. But the innocuous-looking galaxy, also known as 3C 348, has long been known as the brightest radio-emitting object in the constellation Hercules. Emitting nearly a billion times more power in radio wavelengths than our Sun, the galaxy is one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the entire sky.

The VLA radio data reveal enormous, optically invisible jets that, at one-and-a-half million light-years wide, dwarf the visible galaxy from which they emerge. The jets are very-high-energy plasma beams, subatomic particles and magnetic fields shot at nearly the speed of light from the vicinity of the black hole. The outer portions of both jets show unusual ring-like structures suggesting a history of multiple outbursts from the super massive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The innermost parts of the jets are not visible because of the extreme velocity of the material, which causes relativistic effects that beam the light away from us. Far from the galaxy, the jets become unstable and break up into the rings and wisps.

The entire radio source is surrounded by a very hot, X-ray-emitting cloud of gas, not seen in this optical-radio composite.

Hubble's view of the field also shows a companion elliptical galaxy very close to the center of the optical-radio source, which may be merging with the central galaxy. Several other elliptical and spiral galaxies that are visible in the Hubble data may be members of a cluster of galaxies.Hercules A is by far the brightest and most massive galaxy in the cluster.

LinkedIn infuses social into B2B marketing - Direct Marketing News

LinkedIn recently launched a new API program, an enhancement to its LinkedIn Ad platform, to help B2B marketers bring a social element to targeting specific customers, uncovering leads, and automating campaigns.

?One of the big things that we see is...[that] people that aren't doing general consumer-based advertising for CPG, or entertainment, or commerce, but are actually trying to do B2B type advertising campaigns to drive leads and customers of technology or white papers, or free trial offers,? says Calvin Lui, president and chief strategy officer of social marketing technology company Unified?one ?of the first three organizations to take part in the program. ?What LinkedIn offers to that type of community is a true pay channel to reach audiences of a specific mentality with a specific type of targeting profile that you just can't find in consumer-oriented social networks.?

Along with Unified, Adobe and Bizo comprise the remaining two companies to test-drive the new program. Lui says that Unified has been purchasing media from the social network since its launch in January 2012.

?We've been working with LinkedIn on the API program for a little while now,? Lui says. ?What it enables us to do is automate a lot of the leader buying and campaign reporting that we've been doing manually through the editor process.?

Using the new API program, Lui says, B2B marketers can create profiles based on company type, industry type, company size defined by employees, and job titles to better target specific customers. The interaction between LinkedIn's niche customers is one of the traits that Lui says distinguishes it from other social networks.

?One of the great things about LinkedIn is the type of audience that they bring, and the engagement model they bring with folks from their network is very unique,? he says. ?When you think about B2B advertisers that want to do company profiling, or job title profiling, or any of the professional marketing or professional business-type targeting, LinkedIn is by far the best network out there to be able to bring that to market."

Lui adds that Unified intends to promote the new API program in the 2013 year.

?We're partners with Salesforce and Oracle. Their customer bases are very much B2B; many of their customers have asked us if we can help some of their B2B-type marketing programs,? Lui says. ?Traditionally, that's been done through email, trade shows, [and] lead generation programs. But now, we can bring social capabilities to those marketers that have this type of demand to do specific types of marketing and measurement all the way back to ROI.?

This isn't LinkedIn's first attempt at wooing B2B marketers into its social space. The social network recently released its IT Purchasing Goes Social study, which examines the extent to which LinkedIn influences IT decision makers. According to the study, 88% of IT decision makers pay LinkedIn a visit monthly, and 85% say they use social networks for work-related purposes.

LinkedIn has opened the door for companies to join Adobe, Bizo, and Unified in the API program and is now currently accepting and evaluating applications.
