Exclusive: Thermo bids for Life Tech; PE firms finalizing offer - sources

By Greg Roumeliotis and Soyoung Kim

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc made a binding offer for Life Technologies Corp on Tuesday as private equity firms raced to finalize a consortium to take the genetic testing equipment maker private, several people familiar with the matter said.

Life Tech, with a current market value of more than $11 billion, has become an attractive target due to its strength in advanced diagnostics and gene sequencing and if Thermo Fisher were to prevail, the deal would make it a major player in the genetic sequencing market.

It would be also be by far its biggest deal since the $12.8 billion merger in 2006 of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific International that created the world's largest maker of scientific equipment and laboratory instruments.

Thermo Fisher met a bid deadline on Tuesday but private equity firms working on a joint bid missed it and were working late into the evening to secure the equity required to support an offer, the people said.

Blackstone Group LP, Carlyle Group LP and Singapore's state investor Temasek Holdings were in talks with KKR & Co LP about securing the required equity and finalizing a buyout consortium, the people said.

Life Technologies would likely accept an offer past the bid deadline to keep the process competitive, the people added.

Thermo Fisher is bidding more than $65 per each Life Tech share, two of the people said. While the exact price could not be learned, Thermo had been considering a bid of $65 to $70 per share, sources said last week.

The private equity group would likely bid close to $65 per share, two separate people said.

All the people asked not to be named because details of the auction are not public. Life Technologies, Thermo Fisher, KKR, Blackstone and Carlyle declined to comment while Temasek did not respond to a request for comment.

Shares of Life Tech ended up 1.3 percent at $66.19 on Tuesday, giving it a market value of $11.3 billion. They are up 33 percent so far this year on expectations of a possible deal, outperforming a 9.6 percent rise in the S&P 500 index.

At this level, Life Tech trades at 14.6 times forward 12-month earnings compared to an average 13.6 times for its peer group, according to Thomson Reuters data.

DANAHER, ROCHE

Carlsbad, California-based Life Tech, which has hired advisers to explore a sale, had also attracted interest from industrial and healthcare conglomerate Danaher Corp and drugmaker Roche Holding AG, people familiar with the matter told Reuters previously.

While their position could not be confirmed, one of the people said that neither of these two companies had carried out the procedural work necessary ahead of the bid deadline that would have allowed them to make offers. Danaher and Roche did not respond to requests for comment.

Roche, which has its own diagnostics business, made a hostile run at genetic sequencing company Illumina Inc last year but walked away from the $6.8 billion offer, refusing demands to raise the bid.

Life Tech is itself the product of the combination of two companies -- Invitrogen, a maker of cultures used in the manufacture of biotech medicines, and Applied Biosystems, a genetic testing company.

If Thermo Fisher wins the auction, it would also boost its presence in scientific research, genetic analysis and applied sciences, creating a healthcare technology giant with annual revenues of over $16 billion and some 50,000 employees.

At a range of $65 to $70 per share for Life Tech, Thermo Fisher believes the deal would add to its earnings, people familiar with the matter have previously told Reuters.

Snow's melting: Time to find budget hiking boots

By Kara Reinhardt, Cheapism.com

The Merrell Moab Ventilator is a low-cut hiking shoe, an increasingly popular and affordable alternative to higher-cut boots.

April showers and spring snowmelt signal that it?s time to trade in ski boots and snowshoes for hiking boots. Of course, those harbingers of warm weather also turn hiking trails to muck. Opt for a cut-rate pair of boots, and you could easily wind up with wet, blistered feet and a muddy rump. You could also wind up with a high-quality hiking shoe or even a reliable mid-cut boot for under $100.

Cheapism.com has highlighted four top picks, all of which come in men?s and women?s versions.

  • The Merrell Moab Ventilator (starting at $72) has been labeled an excellent value in side-by-side comparisons by outdoor gear experts. This is a supportive hiking shoe that grips the trail with deep 5-millimeter lugs, or treads, yet it?s lightweight and very comfortable, according to online reviews. While the Ventilator is not waterproof (pricier Moab models are), it has a highly breathable mesh upper that allows it to dry out quickly in warm weather. The namesake ventilation further helps prevent blisters by airing out hot, sweaty feet. (Where to buy)
  • The Keen Alamosa WP (starting at $72) caters to hikers who prefer a waterproof shoe. In this price range the term is often used loosely, but reviewers verify that the waterproof membrane that lines this shoe prevents water from leaking through. They also note the sturdy yet extremely lightweight construction, including durable, suede-like nubuck leather and a rubber bumper on the toe. (Where to buy)
  • The mid-cut L.L. Bean Waterproof Trail Model Hikers (starting at $90) are classic hiking boots that come up higher on the ankle to provide additional support and protection. The mid-cut design alone is often enough to price a shoe over $100 and this budget pair is waterproof to boot (no pun intended). Again, numerous reviewers vouch for the effectiveness of the waterproof lining. (Where to buy)
  • The Salomon Synapse (starting at $60) is uniquely designed for trail running, or for covering a lot of ground quickly. The midsole is tilted downward, toward the toe, to propel the wearer forward. A record holder who completed the fastest end-to-end hike of the Appalachian Trail wore these inexpensive shoes to accomplish her feat. Novices, too, have found them durable and supremely comfortable. (Where to buy)

Light hiking shoes dominate the low end of the market and have become a popular alternative to heavy-duty backpacking boots. A multi-day trip with a heavy pack over rough, uneven terrain calls for a burly boot with a higher price tag. But for day hikes that don?t venture off the trail, many hikers prefer nimbler footwear. While that often means a low-cut shoe, a few mid-cut boots, such as L.L. Bean?s Trail Model Hikers, offer similarly light weight and low cost.

Another hallmark of this type of shoe is a sole that?s supportive without being too stiff. All four pairs listed above manage to walk that line, reviewers say. They feature foot beds made from cushy EVA, or ethylene vinyl acetate. However, nothing will make a boot comfortable if it doesn?t fit correctly. Outside magazine explains exactly how to find the right one for you.

Exactly the leftists you imagine will protest dedication of new Bush library at SMU

On April 25, the gleaming, new George W. Bush Presidential Center on the campus of Southern Methodist University will be officially dedicated.

The center will honor and preserve the legacy of the 43rd U.S. president in the same basic way that such an edifice has similarly honored every president since Herbert Hoover.

Naturally, protesters calling themselves The People?s Response will seek to rain on Bush?s parade because they are still hopping mad about the Iraq War.

?As the elite gather to celebrate the dedication of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and cast a veneer of legitimacy on the Bush administration and its policies, join us in Dallas and let your voice be heard!? urges the group?s website.

?It?s quite disturbing,? protestor-on-the-street Hadi Jawad told KHOU. ?It?s quite disheartening to see this monument, this edifice here in Dallas, Texas.?

Jawad also told the Houston CBS affiliate that he has ?skin in the game? because he is ?of Iraqi descent.?

He said he is still mad incensed about the war, calling it ?the unnecessary and unjustifiable, the immoral and illegal war that Bush and Cheney took us into.?

An official for the Bush Center told KHOU that the center ?supports folks? rights to protest peacefully and express their views.?

Local officials have told protest organizers that demonstrations won?t be allowed near the Bush Center. However, protesters will be able to object to the dedication of the Bush Center to their hearts? content from a spot across a busy interstate.

So far, according to The People?s Response?s Facebook page, 368 people have indicated that they plan to show up. Pledged attendees include a number of students as well as a smattering of professional activists and, of course, journalist and former Lyndon Johnson aide Bill Moyers.

The group?s festivities are scheduled to last the week of April 22 to 26 and will include speakers, workshops, teach-ins, art and music.

Monday starts ? after brunch ? with something called Creative Action. The left-wing activist group CODEPINK will be involved.

Tuesday?s highlight will be a press conference, at which members of The People?s Response will preen and likely spout anti-war rhetoric against a president who hasn?t been in office for four years.

?Come out and be part of the photo-op!? the group?s website says. ?Signs provided. Please wear black.?

Wednesday includes several anti-war speakers including Debra Sweet, the Director of World Can?t Wait, which was founded in 2005 to ?drive out the Bush regime? ? and heroically succeeded just three years later.

Thursday ? the big dedication day ? will bring a rally against the Bush Center.

?We will be dressed in black as the March of the Dead, along with veterans, will lead a slow, respectful procession toward the Bush Center in remembrance of those tortured or killed,? declares the The People?s Response. ?Signs and banners will be provided. If you bring your own, please keep them on-message and coordinated with the dramatic black and white visual.?

A highly anticipated ?dance party for peace? is scheduled for Thursday night.

Friday will mark the end of the week of anti-Bush protests. There will be a motivational breakfast and debriefing at the Holiday Inn Market Center.

Screen Shot 2013-04-09 at 6.00.00 PMAfter years of rumors, the Facebook Phone aka the HTC First finally launches April 12th for $99 on AT&T. It's light and supple, plus comes with a suped-up version of Facebook Home pre-installed that pipes in non-Facebook notifications, but the 5MP Camera is a let down. Luke Bryan pulls off huge upset at ACM Awards

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Luke Bryan pulled off a shocking win on Sunday night when he beat out heavyweights Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift to win the Academy of Country Music Award's biggest prize of the evening: entertainer of the year. The winner is chosen by fan votes.

Luke Bryan accepts the entertainer of the year award during the 48th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on April 7.

The musician, who co-hosted the show with Shelton, was stunned after his name was announced, and appeared to cry as he slowly walked out from backstage to accept the award from Shania Twain, who was making her first appearance at the ACMs in 10 years. Even with his trophy in hand, Bryan stood in silent shock at the microphone for a long while.

"This is ... I don't know what to say, you guys," he finally started. "Thank you guys so much, fans, for doing this to me, thank you so much for making my life what it is. What I always wanted to be was just a country singer that got to ride on a tour bus and show up on a new stage and play music every night. ? I just started headlining! ? Every time I step on stage, it is a blessing to me to play for fans. ... This is the defining moment of my life!"

Bryan, 36, been on the scene since his debut album was released in 2007, but wasn't a headlining act until his single "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)" exploded after he started delivering booty-shaking performances of the catchy tune at awards shows in 2011.

Al Powers / AP

The other big winner of the night was Shelton's wife, Miranda Lambert. She took home three of the four trophies she was nominated for: song and single record of the year for "Over You," and female vocalist for the fourth year in a row. Lambert shared the song of the year victory with her husband, who co-wrote the tune.

"Last time this happened, you didn't get a chance to talk, and you're not going to get a chance either this time," he joked as he and his wife accepted their trophies. "I'll?tell you all something: I?ve learned so much from this human being standing next to me ? she blows me away, but as far as standing here right now, I used to think I was a decent songwriter until I started hanging out with her."

Notable moments from the show included Garth Brooks and George Strait's performance together; Reba McIntire's announcement that the ACM was "renaming its most prestigious honor to the ACM Dick Clark Artist of the Decade Award"; and Stevie Wonder closing the show with "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."

The complete list of winners:

  • Entertainer of the year: Luke Bryan
  • Male vocalist: Jason Aldean
  • Female vocalist: Miranda Lambert
  • Vocal duo: Thompson Square
  • Vocal group: Little Big Town
  • New artist: Florida Georgia Line
  • Album: Eric Church, "Chief"
  • Single record of the year: Miranda Lambert, "Over You"
  • Song: Miranda Lambert, "Over You"
  • Video: Little Big Town, "Tornado"
  • Vocal event: "The ?Only Way I Know," Jason Aldean with Luke Bryan and Eric Church
  • New male vocalist: Brantley Gilbert
  • New female vocalist: Jana Kramer
  • New vocal duo or group: Florida Georgia Line

The 48th Annual ACM Awards was held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

iTunes is out of date and out of touch ? so what's next?

I was at a Starbucks last weekend, and I grabbed one of those "Pick of the Week" cards, one for Jeremy Piven's new show. I felt a momentary flutter of excitement ? sweet, free TV episode! In HD! But then I realized that I would have to download some huge file, and even then, I could only watch the show on the device I downloaded it to.

The concept suddenly seemed awkward ... antiquated, even.

And if I liked what I saw? I could pay Apple $2.99 per episode for the privilege of downloading more huge files. As a paying subscriber of Netflix and Amazon Prime ? not to mention cable TV ? my final reaction was, "No thanks."

(If you want my free download, the code is YY3FTKPH3W4F ? it'll only work once, so first come, first served. If you missed that chance, you can also watch the first episode on your iPhone or iPad for free ... on the PBS app.)

The iTunes situation only gets worse with music. In a world where Pandora streaming radio is free and Spotify's $9.99-per-month anywhere music-on-demand service is a crazy good deal, why would anybody buy an album?

Take it from a music and movie lover who has probably spent far more money than you on iTunes: It's over! There are few reasons to pay for specific music and video files ? and still fewer reasons to download them to your hard drive and sit on them like some gigabyte-greedy dragon.

Apple will be able to milk online music sales for a while, but Netflix, Amazon and other streaming video services are already taking customers away from iTunes and its rent-or-buy download model. If Apple doesn't announce a plan at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, it risks getting shoved aside in the digital media realm like it's being shoved aside in the smartphone business.

There is hope for Apple fans: CNet is reporting that the company is "close to striking a streaming deal with two of the major music labels" for a service that resembles Pandora. It might have extra features, like the ability to jump back to the beginning of a song, or buy the track you are listening to. This won't bring back those who have already gone to Spotify, but it's a step in the direction Apple needs to go, music-wise.

As for video, what Apple should do is revisit its abandoned streaming TV approach, and allow people who purchased movies to stream them from any registered iDevice. (At the moment, if I want to watch "The Return of the King" ? which I "own" on iTunes ? I have to commit to a 4.1GB download. Ugh.)

I say this is what Apple should do. What Apple probably will do (which is fine with me but not as great for Apple) is open Apple TV to more apps like Spotify and Amazon Video on Demand. They're already available on iPad, iPhone and, of course, Macs, so it only makes sense. If Apple doesn't mind me spending money on other services, provided I use them on Apple hardware, I'm OK with that. But sooner or later, all of those services will work equally well on an HTC phone or a Samsung tablet, and then what?

Don't give away your store, Apple. It's time to evolve.

MEGATech Showcase: 40 Years of the Cellphone - MEGATechNews

HOT New Post! - MEGATech Reviews ? Eightarc Fusion Synthesis Professional FightStick for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC - Read It NOW!

MEGATech Showcase: 40 Years of the Cellphone cell1 500x310

The mobile phone is 40 years old. Wrap your head around that. It?ll be tricky, because early mobile phones were some pretty large devices. Truth is that mobile communication goes back over eighty years; but we?re not talking about mobile communications. We?re talking about mobile phones and the first mobile phone call was placed forty years ago.

Martin Cooper and the First Phone Call

Martin Cooper, pictured above, is known as the ?father of the cell phone,? a title he very much earned. Cooper thought up the first handheld mobile phone and led the team that developed it and eventually brought it to the market. He?s also the first person to make a public cellphone call, using a prototype DynaTAC cellular phone, an event that I?m sure brought him a lot of funny looks.

The First Cell Network

In 1971, AT&T went to the Federal Communications Commission and proposed a commercial cellular service. It wasn?t until 1977, six years later, that they were able to follow through with it, and the nation?s first cellular network was born. It was located in Chicago and it only served 1,300 customers out of the gate. Coverage was limited and different geographic areas required different cellular providers, but it was a start.

The Motorola DynaTAC 8000X

MEGATech Showcase: 40 Years of the Cellphone dyna 500x431

In 1984, the first cellular phone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, went on the market. It wasn?t pretty to look out and it sure doesn?t seem very comfortable to hold, but it worked. It also weighed 28 ounces, stood 10 inches high, and dosed you with a lot of radiation, but it worked. It featured a red LED display and the battery could only support a phone call of up to an hour, afterwards you?d have to charge the phone for up to 10 hours.

The Simon Personal Communicator

MEGATech Showcase: 40 Years of the Cellphone i9VTPKApItSk 500x318

Bestowing the title of the first smartphone isn?t as clear cut as the first cell phone. In 1994, IBM released the Simon Personal Communicator, a cell phone that could also send and receive emails and pages, and was also equipped with an address book, calendar, calculator, electronic note pad, and a further assortment of PDA-esque features. Feature-wise, the Simon Personal Communicator could rightfully be called the first smartphone.

Yet the term ?smartphone? wasn?t coined for three more years when in 1997, Ericsson referred to its GS 88 Penelope concept as a ?Smart Phone.? The Penelope never actually made it to market. Even if it had, I think it?s safe to say the Simon Personal Communicator was the official debut smartphone, even if the term hadn?t been invented. You could argue that it was ahead of its time.

Cellphone: The Next Generation

Then there are the generations, commonly labeled as 1G, 2G, etc. The first generation started in 1977 with the development of the first network in Chicago. In the following thirteen years, small networks popped up all over the UK, Canada, Mexico, and the Washington DC/Boston area, as well as in Scandinavian countries. The major difficulty that occurred during the first generation was rapidly expanding usage in the face of limited technology.

Years later in 1991, we saw the shift from analog transmission to digital, which kicked off the second generation. Another big shift was cell phone size, with new technologies allowing the construction of cell phones as light as 100-200 grams. This generation saw the world?s first smartphone, the first person-to-person SMS message, downloadable ringtones, and pre-paid service plans. In Japan, NTT DoCoMo launched the first full Internet service for mobile phones, which would ultimately lead to the third generation.

In 2001, just two years after NTT DoCoMo launched their Internet service, demand for mobile data has become too much for circuit switching, so packet switching becomes the new thing, which ushered in the third generation. Streaming media content was introduced and the way in which mobile phones are used is changed dramatically. The Blackberry 5180 is the first BlackBerry with voice capabilities. The Sanyo SCP-5300 is the first cellphone with an integrated camera. The ROKR is the first mobile phone to include iTunes, and then of course Apple released the first iPhone in 2007. In October 2008, the Android Market launches.

Then in 2009, less than four years ago, mobile data makes the move from packet switching to all-IP transmissions, and with that we?re in the fourth generation. Will this be the generation of the phablet? I sure hope we don?t call it that.

Happy birthday, cellphone.

Suicide bomber kills 20 at political rally in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A suicide bomber blew himself up Saturday at a lunch hosted by a Sunni candidate in Iraq's upcoming regional elections, killing 20 people, officials said.

The blast ripped through a hospitality tent pitched next to the house of Muthana al-Jourani, who is running for the provincial council and held the lunch rally for supporters, councilman Sadiq al-Huseini said.

The attack took place in Baqouba, a mixed Sunni-Shiite city some 60 kilometers (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad. Insurgent attacks and sectarian bloodletting have been rampant there in the decade since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Violence is expected to surge in the run up to Iraq's provincial elections on April 20.

A health official and police officer who provided details about the attack spoke anonymously because they weren't authorized to speak to media.

The police officer said al-Jourani, who was injured in the attack, had not requested any extra security for the political event.

In the city's morgue, at least 10 bodies lay strewn on the ground, draped in black plastic sheets. Emergency crews treated the wounded. At the site of the bombing, white plastic chairs were overturned and men, apparently in shock, stood dazed in blood-stained clothing.

Eyewitness Ahmad al-Hadlouj, a 34-year-old who was wounded in the blast, said hundreds of people had gathered in the side street for the rally. His father, a member of the candidate's political bloc, was also wounded.

"This is our blood (shed) for the people," said al-Hadlouj. "We will still participate in elections."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the police officer said the attack was the hallmark of al-Qaida militants who have used suicide bombers, car bombings and coordinated attacks to try to destabilize the country and undermine confidence in the Shiite-led government. Hard-line Sunni extremists see Shiites and those who work with them as heretics.

A wave of deadly bombings and attacks in March prompted Iraqi officials to conclude that al-Qaida's Iraqi branch, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has been getting stronger. They say rising lawlessness on the Syria-Iraq frontier and cross-border cooperation with the Syrian militant group Nusra Front has improved the militants' supply of weapons and foreign fighters.

Google Glass The Mirror API - How It Works

Timothy Jordan gave developers at SXSW a sneak peek at the Google Mirror API, which is what they'll use to build services for Glass, and now you can see it as a video. ?What it reveals is that the Mirror API has more structure than you might expect.

?

Everyone seems to be as much frightened by Google Glass as they are excited by it, but what of the ways in which we can program it? Surely it is going to be complicated interacting with all that sophisticated design - speech input, speech output, the gesture based UI and so on. Where to start?

The truth of the matter is that the Mirror API only permits a very limited range of interactions with the hardware and the user, but it is probably more than enough for everything but the most radical innovative app that needs to talk directly to the hardware. In brief the Mirror API is based on a simple model that makes it a lot like creating a web app. It is described reasonably well in the video.

Unfortunately 50 minutes to describe a simple API is a bit long and there is a tendency to wander off topic.?After a brief promo for Glass and a discussion of why its all really, really exciting, no mention of scary, we get to an interesting demo of Glass, at around 10 minutes into the video, with an attempt to show what it is like to wear it and use it.

The importance of this section is that it details ?the user interface and how you will be able to interact with with the device. This may not be as impressive as the promo video, but it is much more informative in that it shows Glass taking realistically poor photos and how the user has to swipe and tap at the arm of the glasses to give gesture commands.

The meat of the talk - the API and how it might be used - starts at around 15mins. ?The Mirror REST API is explained in quite a lot of detail including the POST, PUT and GET headers which is perhaps more detail than actually required. Of course, you can use any language that has the ability to work with HTTP on the server and the details of exactly how to issue a POST, PUT or GET vary.?

?

mirrorglass1

?

The API is surprisingly high level and works in terms of "Timeline" cards. These act like the basic unit of interaction with the Glass user. They work like tiny HTML pages downloaded from the server and displayed via Glass and they? have simple menu options that the user can select via a tap. ?You can insert?cards into the user's information stream in response to a subscription notification and the user can scroll through the timeline with a swipe. ?You can also add services that allow cards, e.g. photos, to be shared to new services so the interaction can be two-way.

All of the processing, interaction and generally clever processing is performed on the application's server, which simply sends new Timeline cards and receives any that are saved to the server. This is the same sort of client-server behavior you find in an Ajax app, only much simplified.?

The full Mirror API gives you nothing more than Timeline cards, menu options on the Timeline cards, share entities and subscriptions and this is all. It is all very simple, but it might be more than enough when you add the built-in services that Glass provides.?

When you add it to the voice input capabilities of Glass and the ability to take photos, things become more interesting. For example, the user could voice dictate a reply to a question or send some voice dictated requests to the server. The user could take a photo, say, in response to a request from the server and then share it and so on.?

The real question that is unanswered at the moment is what else there might be in the API above and beyond the Timeline card?

There probably isn't going to be any deeper level of integration with Glass - no lower level interface that allows you to get at the camera or audio system directly. This isn't unreasonable from the point of view of security. The higher level abstraction that Mirror provides treats Glass as a simple I/O device organized as a sequence of Timeline cards, which is probably enough for most applications.

?

?

Once you have understood the way that Timeline cards provide a two-way communication method between your server and the user it all makes sense. Any real work that your app performs has to be done on the server.

So now you know - what do you think you could do with Glass?

Zuckerberg: Home is the 'next version of Facebook,' not heading to iOS anytime soon

Zuckerberg Home is the 'next version of Facebook', not heading to iOS anytime soon

Like what you've seen so far of Home, Facebook's newly announced UI for Android devices? Well, get used to it because, according to Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it's the "next version of Facebook." The people-centric integration, shown off today on the AT&T-exclusive HTC First, makes your individual user profile the "hub" and relies heavily upon a card-like interface for swipe notifications that can be easily read and dismissed. That Facebook would look to Home, a seemingly mobile-native implementation of the social network, as the framework for its platform going forward is unsurprising -- changes recently made to News Feed were done specifically to adapt it to the smartphone space. Whether or not that means you'll see this new interface take over your desktop anytime soon remains to be seen. But take this as a sure sign that Facebook, oft criticized for lagging behind in mobile, is in major course correction mode.

As for when Home will make the transition to iOS, Zuckerberg seemed less optimistic, telling reporters that Android's openness and lack of direct oversight from Google was the major contributing factor to its unveiling today. A version of Home for iOS would require a "partnership" with Apple, which maintains strict control over its "closed" ecosystem; a pairing that would implicitly see Facebook ceding some control to Cupertino. Frame it in that manner and it's easy to see why Home's First debut is a Google-based affair and may continue to be for the foreseeable future. It does seem likely, however, that Microsoft's Windows Phone platform could play host to Home before even iOS, as Zuckerberg's referred to the live-tile OS as falling "somewhere in between" due to the licenses involved.

Californians support coal despite LA plan to ban it

Californian support for clean coal power?is in stark contrast to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's plan to remove coal from the city's electricity mix by the year 2025, Tracey writes.

Clean coal technology enjoys majority support among California voters. It is especially interesting that this support is broad-based, encompassing majorities of Republican, Democratic and voters declining to state a party affiliation. Given that the most important issues to California voters are ?jobs and the economy?, voter sentiment that the state?s energy policies have made it less competitive should be a red flag to Sacramento legislators.

In a recent survey of California voters, nearly 57% answered yes when they were asked ?Do you support or oppose developing new clean coal power plants in California??

When asked the question, ?Do you think that California?s energy policies have made the state more or less competitive??, more than 43% answered yes. And particularly telling is the fact that nearly?one-quarter of California voters (24.7%) feel that the state?s energy policies have made the state far less competitive.

These numbers are in stark contrast to comments recently made by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa when he announced that the city will become the only city in America that won?t get any electricity from coal by the year 2025.?

(AP) ? An Army civilian employee was shot and killed in a parking lot at Kentucky's Fort Knox, and investigators were seeking to question a man in connection with the shooting, authorities said.

Army officials said in a news release late Wednesday that the victim was an employee of the U.S. Army Human Resources Command, which handles personnel actions for soldiers. The shooting occurred in a lot outside the command. The victim was transported to the Ireland Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating a personal incident and not a random act of violence," said Chris Grey, spokesman for the independent Army investigative agency.

The identity of the victim was being withheld pending notification of family.

Police were seeking to speak with a person of interest in the case. The news release identified him as a 5-foot, 9-inch black man who is American and is believed to be using a black Yamaha motorcycle for transportation.

Fort Knox police received a 911 call about the shooting at about 5:40 pm., the news release said.

As a security measure, the post's gates were locked down at about 5:50 p.m. About an hour later, the main gate was fully reopened, but due to enhanced security measures, those coming and going were advised to expect delays.

Fort Knox spokesman Kyle Hodges said late Wednesday that the post remained on a heightened security alert, but said officials don't believe the person of interest was still on post.

He said he could not comment on whether the victim was targeted, or whether the shooting may have been related to his work. He also couldn't say what type of weapon was used.

The FBI dispatched two agents to Fort Knox and is assisting in the investigation, said Mary Trotman, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Louisville.

Potential therapy for human prion disease

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Human diseases caused by misfolded proteins known as prions are some of most rare yet terrifying on the planet -- incurable with disturbing symptoms that include dementia, personality shifts, hallucinations and coordination problems. The most well-known of these is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which can be described as the naturally occurring human equivalent of mad cow disease.

Now, scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have for the first time identified a pair of drugs already approved for human use that show anti-prion activity and, for one of them, great promise in treating these universally fatal disorders.

The study, led by TSRI Professor Corinne Lasm?zas and performed in collaboration with TSRI Professor Emeritus Charles Weissmann and Director of Lead Identification Peter Hodder, was published this week online ahead of print by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The new study used an innovative high-throughput screening technique to uncover compounds that decrease the amount of the normal form of the prion protein (PrP, which becomes distorted by the disease) at the cell surface. The scientists found two compounds that reduced PrP on cell surfaces by approximately 70 percent in the screening and follow up tests.

The two compounds are already marketed as the drugs tacrolimus and astemizole. Tacrolimus is an immune suppressant widely used in organ transplantation. Tacrolimus could prove problematic as an anti-prion drug, however, because of issues including possible neurotoxicity.

However, astemizole is an antihistamine that has potential for use as an anti-prion drug. While withdrawn voluntarily from the U.S. over-the-counter market in 1999 because of rare cardiac arrhythmias when used in high doses, it has been available in generic form in more than 30 countries and has a well-established safety profile. Astemizole not only crosses the blood-brain barrier, but works effectively at a relatively low concentration.

Lasm?zas noted that astemizole appears to stimulate autophagy, the process by which cells eliminate unwanted components. "Autophagy is involved in several protein misfolding neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases," she said. "So future studies on the mode of action of astemizole may uncover potentially new therapeutic targets for prion diseases and similar disorders."

The study noted that eliminating cell surface PrP expression could also be a potentially new approach to treat Alzheimer's disease, which is characterized by the build-up of amyloid ? plaque in the brain. PrP is a cell surface receptor for A? peptides and helps mediate a number of critical deleterious processes in animal models of the disease.

The first author of the study, "Unique Drug Screening Approach for Prion Diseases Identifies Tacrolimus and Astemizole as Antiprion Agents," is Yervand Eduard Karapetyan of The Scripps Research Institute. Other authors include Gian Franco Sferrazza, Minghai Zhou, Gregory Ottenberg, Timothy Spicer, Peter Chase, Mohammad Fallahi, Peter Hodder and Charles Weissmann of The Scripps Research Institute.

(AP) ? A South African newspaper published a grainy cellphone photograph of Oscar Pistorius at a running track in his carbon fiber blades Thursday as the Olympian's agent said his return to training was now imminent ? but denied he was already in training.

The Afrikaans-language Beeld newspaper had the image of what it said was Pistorius, who was charged with murder for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on the front page of its Thursday edition.

In the photograph ? taken by a high school student from a bus passing by the track ? the double amputee is seen from some distance wearing his blades and dark lycra running clothes and is walking on a track with his hands on his hips.

The photo was taken on March 24 by teenager Lisa Smith, her field hockey coach said, when their team was visiting the University of Pretoria where Pistorius' regular practice facility is.

The Associated Press reported on Wednesday that Pistorius had been at the track in the South African capital city on the day of the photograph.

It was the first time Pistorius had put his blades on since he shot dead Steenkamp in his home in the early hours of Feb. 14, his agent, Peet van Zyl, told the AP later on Thursday.

Pistorius was only "having a jog around the track," the agent said, as the newspaper claimed sources had told it the Olympic 400-meter runner and Paralympic champion had begun full training at the university on March 21. Van Zyl disputed that and said neither he nor Ampie Louw, Pistorius' coach and the man who controls his training sessions, were present at the track on the day the photograph was taken.

Field hockey coach and school sports director Charmaine Koekemoer said she was driving the bus past the track at around 10.15 a.m. on the Sunday morning when members of her Hoerskool Voortrekker girls hockey team started shouting "There's Oscar, there's Oscar!" from the back.

Student Smith then took the photo on her BlackBerry, Koekemoer said. It shows Pistorius in the distance with the bars of a metal fence in the foreground. He is the only person in the shot.

"The kids were very excited," Koekemoer told the AP. "That was the excitement, seeing a world icon in real life. It was nothing to do with his case.

"We didn't see him running around the track. He was just walking to the 100 meter end line down the final stretch. It looked like he was going to take his blades off."

The single photo, a grainy image taken through the black fence and showing Pistorius walking on the far side of the track, was accompanied by a front-page story in Beeld under the headlines "Oscar is back on the track" and "In training with other athletes."

Pistorius' management team was expecting the photo to be published, Van Zyl said, after Pistorius had told them he had visited his track with some Australian athletes on the day a little under two weeks ago. Koekemoer ? who was visiting with her students from the eastern city of Pietermaritzburg ? said there were other athletes around Pistorius when they saw him.

Neither Pistorius' coach nor his agent knew about the track visit until afterward, Van Zyl said.

But while Pistorius wasn't yet in a training routine, the agent said, his return could be any day now. The image of the world's most famous disabled athlete back on his unmistakable running blades was likely now to become more and more common again.

"He might get up this morning and call (coach) Ampie (Louw) and say he wants to be at the track at one o'clock," Van Zyl said. Van Zyl also said Pistorius' desire to start training again did not show disrespect to the family of Steenkamp.

Pistorius denies murder in the Valentine's Day killing of model Steenkamp, saying he mistook her for a nighttime intruder in his home. His next scheduled court appearance is June 4, when prosecutors say they intend to serve indictments.

Hubble sees J 900 masquerading as a double star

Apr. 2, 2013 ? A new image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows Jonckheere 900 or J 900, a planetary nebula -- glowing shells of ionized gas pushed out by a dying star. Discovered in the early 1900s by astronomer Robert Jonckheere, the dusty nebula is small but fairly bright, with a relatively evenly spread central region surrounded by soft wispy edges.

Despite the clarity of this Hubble image, the two objects in the picture above can be confusing for observers. J 900's nearby companion, a faint star in the constellation of Gemini, often causes problems for observers because it is so close to the nebula -- when observation conditions are bad, this star seems to merge into J 900, giving it an elongated appearance. Hubble's position above the Earth's atmosphere means that this is not an issue for the space telescope.

Astronomers have also mistakenly reported observations of a double star in place of these two objects, as the planetary nebula is quite small and compact.

J 900's central star is only just visible in this image, and is very faint -- fainter than the nebula's neighbor. The nebula appears to display a bipolar structure, where there are two distinct lobes of material emanating from its center, enclosed by a bright oval disk.

Transformers 4 Will Be a Chinese Co-Production

Here's a very simple lesson in Hollywood economics. When someone makes a movie that grosses comfortably over a hundred million dollars in some other, non-US territory, the studio responsible will do whatever it takes to maximize the presence of the sequel in that same territory. And so it comes as no surprise to learn that with Hollywood in general casting lusting eyes at the massive Chinese market and with Michael Bay's Transformers 3 grossing $165 million in the Chinese mainland, the upcoming Mark Wahlberg starring Transformers 4 will be an official Chinese co-production.

The trade off is pretty much a no brainer from a production standpoint. In exchange for including some Chinese cast - cast always being a secondary concern in these films anyway - and shooting in some Chinese locations, the producers get direct investment from China Movie Channel and Jiaflix Enterprises while also guaranteeing that the film can be released wide across the country without the hassle of having to be selected as one of the limited number of foreign productions allowed in via the restrictive import laws.

Sure, the China Movie Channel is a government organization run directly by SARFT - responsible for film censorship, among other things - but, hey. Nobody seems to watch these things for story, either, so it's not like it really matters what requirements may be placed there, right?
