Activists suspect Israeli spies behind flotilla woes (AFP)

ATHENS (AFP) ? Jumpy activists on the ill-fated mission to Gaza insist the evidence is mounting that Israeli secret services are behind the slew of mishaps that have dogged the flotilla.

Two "sabotaged" boats and a stream of bureaucratic obstacles have prevented the convoy from setting sail from Greece to challenge the sea blockade of the Gaza Strip, and passengers have accused Israel of dirty tricks and espionage.

Israel has laughed off the allegations as "paranoid and ridiculous," mocking the pro-Palestinian activists for believing life was like "a James Bond film" and suggesting they "leave the movie and return to reality."

But activists say their operation has been plagued by ill-fortune that bears the hallmark of the Mossad secret service.

Suspicions were aroused after news that the Irish boat, Saoirse, had been "sabotaged in a dangerous manner" in the Turkish port of Gocek, just days after the Swedish-owned Juliano was vandalised in Greece.

"Guess who? Mossad's behind this for sure," said one activist, as organisers attempted to ensure a round-the-clock guard on the remaining boats.

Israel has said it will stop any boats that attempt to enter Gaza "with minimal confrontation" -- prompting activists to accuse the state of attempting to stop the mission before it sets off.

"You don't think these attacks were done by amateurs do you?" said a passenger who asked not to be named. "We have to be very careful about what we say and do, we're under surveillance."

Activists? luck worsened when a French television company set to cover their departure discovered their hotel room had been broken into, their satellite equipment damaged and their computer tampered with.

"Of course it might just be an unconnected crime," the producer said. "But it seems a bizzare coincidence that someone should go to the effort of riddling our Macintosh computer with viruses."

Activists also believe there may have been an attempt to sabotage the petrol destined for the French boat, Louise Michel.

Greek police turned up at the Piraeus port near Athens on Thursday and stopped the crew just as they were about to refuel, banning them from doing so on the grounds that the boat's papers were not in order.

With the petrol in Greek custody, organiser Thomas Sommer said they were "getting a sample to send to our lawyer so that it can be tested" should something happen to the ship out at sea.

By Sunday it was clear that only four boats of the initial 10-strong flotilla would be able to take part in the mission, none of them legally because of a Greek ban on Gaza-bound vessels leaving the port.

The 300 or so activists from 22 countries who had signed up to take part still hope to find a way to cram onto the remaining vessels and defy the ban.

"That's unless another boat gets sabotaged first," Sommer said.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? An executive convicted of orchestrating a nearly $3 billion fraud as chairman of one of America's largest private mortgage companies was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison by a federal judge.

Authorities described the case against Lee B. Farkas, the 58-year-old former chairman of Florida-based Taylor Bean & Whitaker, as one of the largest prosecutions arising from the nation's financial crisis. The fraud put thousands of employees out of work and contributed to the collapse of Colonial Bank, authorities said, calling Colonial's demise the sixth-largest bank collapse in U.S. history.

"He deserves to be punished severely in light of the enormity of his crimes," federal prosecutor Patrick Stokes told U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema in recommending the defendant receive life in prison.

Farkas, who denied any wrongdoing when he testified at his trial, was convicted in April of all 14 counts, including securities fraud and conspiracy. On Thursday, he acknowledged taking risks and making errors in judgment to keep his company afloat. But did not directly apologize for any fraud.

"When faced with the prospect of Taylor Bean & Whitaker sinking, I had to take risks," said Farkas, who was taken into custody following the verdict and appeared in court Thursday in a green prison jumpsuit. "I let Taylor Bean & Whitaker get out of control by letting it grow too fast."

Brinkema told Farkas she detected no remorse as she sentenced him to 30 years ? twice the 15-year sentence requested by his attorneys.

The fraud began in 2002 and took multiple forms until Taylor Bean collapsed in 2009 and the scheme unraveled, prosecutors said. Taylor Bean overdrew its main account with Alabama-based Colonial Bank by several million dollars and eventually double- and triple-pledged mortgages it held to a variety of investors. Prosecutors also alleged that Taylor Bean sold hundreds of million in worthless mortgages to Colonial.

They say Farkas was motivated by a lavish lifestyle, maintaining several dozen classic cars, a private jet and seaplane and multiple houses, including one in Key West.

Farkas, of Ocala, Fla., is the last of seven employees and executives from Taylor Bean and from Colonial to be sentenced. The other six cooperated with the government and agreed to testify against him in to secure lighter sentences for themselves.

Prosecutors say Colonial and two other major banks ? Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas ? were collectively cheated out of nearly $3 billion in a scheme that spanned more than seven years.

They say Farkas and his co-defendants also tried to fraudulently obtain more than $500 million in taxpayer-funded relief from the government's bank bailout program, the Troubled Asset Relief Program, also called TARP. Neither Taylor Bean nor Colonial ever received any TARP money, even though TARP at one point gave conditional approval to a payment of roughly $550 million, investigators say.

Farkas' lawyer. Bruce Rogow, said prosecutors had magnified Farkas' role in the fraud and said that while his client may have made naive or foolish business decisions, he was not a calculating criminal deserving of a life sentence. He said each of Farkas' co-defendants deserved blame for allowing the fraud to continue for years.

"He is not the ogre that the government makes him out" to be, Rogow said.
