Putin warns West as he launches presidential bid (AP)

MOSCOW ? Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sternly warned the West not to interfere in Russia's elections, as he launched his campaign to reclaim the presidency in a speech Sunday before thousands of flag-waving supporters.

Putin stepped down in 2008 after two presidential terms, but kept his hold on power. He announced in September that he intended to return to the top job next year and was formally nominated Sunday by his United Russia party.

"All our foreign partners need to understand this: Russia is a democratic country, it's a reliable and predictable partner with which they can and must reach agreement, but on which they cannot impose anything from the outside," Putin told his audience.

The party congress, which was televised live, was aimed at boosting support for Putin and his party before parliamentary elections one week away.

Increasingly seen as representing the interests of a corrupt bureaucracy, United Russia has watched its public approval ratings plummet in recent months. The party is still certain to win the Dec. 4 election, but is expected to lose the current two-thirds majority that has allowed it to change the constitution at will.

Putin's decision to swap jobs with President Dmitry Medvedev after the presidential vote in March, presented as a done deal at the party congress in September, also has soured the public mood. Many Russians are wary of Putin's authoritarian tendencies and fear he will remain in power for 12 more years to become the longest-serving leader since Communist times.

Sunday's congress began with a steel worker, a businessman, a farmer, a decorated special services officer and a noted film director standing up one after another to praise Putin as the only man capable of leading the country. The 11,000 delegates filling the Moscow sports arena chanted "Putin, Putin" and "The people trust Putin!"

Putin promised Russians stability, a word he repeated often throughout his speech. In countering criticism that he has tightened his control at the expense of democracy, Putin insisted that Russia needs a "stable political system" to guarantee "stable development" for decades to come.

"This is an extremely important task for Russia with its history of upheavals and revolutions," he said.

He used the occasion to lash out at opposition leaders, saying they had brought the country to ruin when they served in the government in the 1990s.

"They killed industry, agriculture and the social sphere," Putin said. "They stabbed the knife of civil war in the very heart of Russia by allowing bloodshed in the North Caucasus. In fact, they led the country to the brink of catastrophe, the edge of a precipice."

He said Russia wants to develop cooperation with the West, but strongly warned the U.S. and Europe against paying too much attention to the Kremlin's critics and providing them with financial support.

"We know that ... representatives of some countries meet with those whom they pay money, the so-called grant recipients, give them instructions and guidance for what 'work' they need to do to influence the election campaign in our country," Putin said.

"That's a wasted effort, like throwing money to the winds," he said.

Putin said those who provide grants to Russian non-governmental organizations "would do better using this money to pay back their domestic debt and stop conducting such a costly and inefficient foreign policy."

Putin promised his countrymen that by maintaining a steady course they would build "a strong, rich and prosperous Russia." Offering something for everyone, he pledged to make it easier to do business, to improve the educational system and health care, to raise taxes on the rich and to bolster the military.

"In the next five to 10 years we must take our armed forces to a qualitatively new level. Of course, this will require big spending .... but we must do this if we want to defend the dignity of our country," he said.

Putin also said he would pursue his project of forming a Eurasian Union to boost integration between Russia and its neighbors, restoring some of the links that were destroyed when the Soviet Union collapsed 20 years ago.

He offered little new to address the calls from businessmen, economists and political liberals for reforms seen as necessary for Russia to modernize its economy and further its development.

"The signals so far have certainly been: no change, more of the same, muddling along, stability even if it comes at a high cost," said Masha Lipman, a scholar at the Carnegie Moscow Center.

She said any reforms that would increase public participation and encourage initiative are rightly seen as a serious risk for the political monopoly that Putin has established.

"Power is concentrated at the top, there is ultimately one arbiter," Lipman said. "I see no reason why this will change."

Egypt's ElBaradei turns up heat on ruling generals (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei has offered to lead a government of national unity, raising the pressure on Egypt's ruling generals amid protests demanding an immediate end to army rule.

Activists are calling on citizens to converge again in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Sunday, a day before the start of a parliamentary election overshadowed by political turmoil and the threat of violence.

The interim government led by Essam Sharaf resigned last week as protests against army rule intensified in Cairo and other cities. The violence has left 42 people dead.

Facing its worst crisis since it pushed President Hosni Mubarak from office during a popular uprising in February, the army has promised a speedier handover to civilians, offered a referendum on military rule and named a new prime minister.

But demonstrators have rejected the military's choice of a 78-year-old veteran of Egyptian politics to lead a new government and say it must hand over power to civilians now.

Some protest groups want ElBaradei to head a civilian body that would replace the ruling military council in supervising Egypt's transition to democracy.

ElBaradei himself is respected among pro-democracy campaigners but many Egyptians view him as out of touch because he spent much of his career outside the country, particularly during his time at the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog.

His campaign team said late on Saturday he was prepared to drop his bid to be head of state if he is asked to lead a transition government.

It said he has met revolutionary youth coalitions and political parties who had rejected Ganzouri's appointment.

"The political forces and groups stressed that the only way out of the crisis is to form a national coalition government with full powers to manage the transitional period until presidential elections are held," his team said in a statement.

It said ElBaradei would abandon his bid for the presidency if he were asked formally to form a government, "so as to be completely neutral in the interim period."

Many Egyptians yearning for an end to upheaval want the parliamentary election to begin on Monday on schedule and some protesters agree, despite their hostility to those in power.

Abdul Aal Diab, a 46-year-old state employee protesting in Tahrir, said the election should not be mixed up with demands for the departure of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council.

"This is one thing, that is something else," he said. "Everyone will be in the polling stations come Monday."

"Why are you so sure?" interrupted 27-year-old Mustafa Essam. "I won't go. I have no faith in anyone. We don't know anything about these elections."

Groups chanted slogans against the generals in Tahrir Square overnight as other people wandered among banners, tents and tea stalls fully equipped with chairs and tables that lent the protest an air of permanence.

LONG, COMPLEX VOTE

The prolonged political turmoil has compounded an economic crisis that threatens to make life even harder for the millions of Egyptians living in poverty.

Alarmed by the violence in Cairo and other cities, the United States and the European Union have urged a swift handover to civilian rule in a country where the prolonged political turmoil has compounded economic woes.

The vote due to start on Monday is billed as Egypt's first free and fair election in decades, but a confusing array of candidates and parties and fears of bullying, bribery and violence at polling stations offer voters a daunting challenge.

The complex, drawn-out election to parliament's lower house concludes in early January. Voting for the upper house and the presidency will follow before the end of June.

Reflecting security concerns, Ahmed al-Zind, head of Egypt's Judges Club, told a news conference the organization had taken out private insurance to cover all the judges involved in supervising the election.

Sunday's rally call suggests the loose pro-democracy movement spearheading the protests has rejected the army's decision to recall Kamal Ganzouri, a 78-year-old politician who served as prime minister under Mubarak during the 1990s.

A television clip circulated on Facebook in the past 24 hours shows Ganzouri sitting one seat away from Tantawi on January 25, the first day of Egypt's revolt, as they listen to a speech by former Interior Minister Habib al-Adli, who is on trial with Mubarak on charges of ordering protesters to be killed.

Egyptians protesting against the appointment of Ganzouri clashed with police firing tear gas in central Cairo on Saturday. The Interior Ministry said a protester was killed by accident, an account backed by Ahmad Zeidan, 18, an activist at the sit-in who said he had seen the youth being run over.

Nasa ready to launch Mars rover

  • Project costed at $2.5bn; will see initial surface operations lasting two Earth years
  • Onboard plutonium generator will deliver heat and electricity for at least 14 years
  • 75kg science payload more than 10 times as massive as those of earlier US Mars rovers
  • Equipped with tools to brush and drill into rocks, to scoop up, sort and sieve samples
  • Variety of analytical techniques to discern chemistry in rocks, soil and atmosphere
  • Will try to make first definitive identification of organic (carbon rich) compounds
  • Even carries a laser to zap rocks; beam will identify atomic elements in rocks

All is set for one of the most ambitious space missions ever devised.

Nasa is about to launch its latest Mars rover, nicknamed Curiosity, from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

At nearly a tonne, the six-wheeled vehicle dwarfs all previous robots sent to the surface of the planet.

The machine carries a suite of sophisticated instruments and tools, including a hammer drill and a laser, to find out whether Mars is, or ever has been, suitable for life.

The US space agency will get its first opportunity to launch the robot - also known as the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) - at 10:02 local time (15:02 GMT) on Saturday.

Weather conditions look good on the Space Coast and engineers report no technical issues after replacing a suspect battery in Curiosity's Atlas 5 launch rocket earlier in the week.

Lift-off is just the start for what Nasa hopes will be a multi-year campaign at the Red Planet.

The rover is equipped with a plutonium battery and so should have ample power to keep rolling for more than a decade. It is likely the mechanisms on MSL will wear out long before its energy supply.

"MSL is an incredibly important flagship mission for this agency? as important as Hubble," observed Doug McCuistion, Nasa's Mars exploration programme director.

The organisation has certainly invested a huge amount of money in the project (costed at $2.5bn/?1.6bn), and has had to bear a barrage of criticism for delays and budget overruns.

But Nasa believes the memory of past woes will quickly fade when this exciting mission reaches the surface of Mars in eight-and-a-half-months' time. That is how long the robot will take to cover the 570-million-km cruise distance to the Red Planet after Saturday's launch.

Animation of Curiosity's journey to Mars and arrival on the Red Planet (Courtesy of Nasa)

MSL is being aimed at a deep equatorial depression called Gale Crater, which contains a central mountain that rises some 5km above the plain below.

The crater was chosen as the landing site because satellite imagery had suggested it may well be one of the best places on Mars to look for evidence that ancient environments could have supported microbial activity. This included pictures of sediments at the base of the peak that were clearly laid down in the presence of abundant water.

MSL will use its suite of 10 instruments to study the local rock, soil and atmosphere.

"We feel confident that within two years we can achieve a level in the mound that's probably 350m to 400m up," said project scientist John Grotzinger.

"After that, the warranty expires. But pending the interest of science to keep on going, we think the slopes are gentle enough that if you took an appropriately circuitous route you could make it to the top of the mound."

First, though, MSL-Curiosity has to land safely, and the history of Mars exploration is wretched. Of the 40 or so ventures launched since 1960, only about a third have delivered any real level of success.

The US rovers Spirit and Opportunity, which landed in 2004, and the Pathfinder-Sojourner robot, which landed in 1997, all used the very effective technique of wrapping the vehicles in airbags to cushion their impact on the surface.

But Curiosity is too heavy to employ the same system and so will be using a rocket-powered "skycrane" to slow the final moments of descent and to position the rover softly on the crater floor.

It is a novel approach and, should it prove successful, will point the way to ever more massive objects being landed on Mars - a capability that will be important if manned missions are ever to be sent to the Red Planet.

Although predominantly a US venture, MSL-Curiosity has important contributions from Russia, Canada, Spain and France. Europe in particular will be watching Curiosity closely because the rover design will form the template for its proposed joint mission with America in 2018.

That rover - known in Europe as ExoMars - would be the first step in a multi-mission objective to bring Martian rocks back to Earth.

ExoMars would seek out signs of life on, and just below, the surface, and also cache rocks for collection by later spacecraft.

Opinion: Arsenal's van Persie rivals Messi

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:27 a.m. ET Nov. 24, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Robin van Persie was a better footballer than Lionel Messi in 2011. Or are statistics which suggest that misleading? Either way, this is official: It is plain absurd that the captain of Arsenal isn't a nominee with Messi for FIFA's Golden Ball award.

Seems Van Persie and injustice are bedfellows. Remember his sending off against Messi's Barcelona in the Champions League in March? Van Persie claimed he did not hear Massimo Busacca blow his whistle. Seemed plausible given the din from the 95,000-plus Nou Camp crowd. The Swiss referee didn't want to know and he ordered Van Persie off. Whether Arsenal might have won that match if Van Persie's hearing had been better and if the Dutchman had stayed on the pitch remains one of football's unanswerables.

In fact, "what if?" follows Van Persie around. That the question is posed in relation to Van Persie shows his importance to Arsenal and the London club's ambitions and future.

If the strong, reliable and intelligent scorer of goals had not hurt his knee volleying home his strike in the League Cup final in February, forcing Arsene Wenger to replace him in the second half with wet blanket Nicklas Bendtner, might Arsenal have won the trophy, instead of losing 2-1 to Birmingham?

Possibly.

If Van Persie hadn't torn right ankle ligaments playing for the Netherlands, forcing Wenger to muddle on without him for five months (he even resorted to the bottom-of-a-barrel measure of playing the ill-suited Andrei Arshavin as a central striker), might Arsenal have won the Premier League title in 2010, instead of Chelsea?

Maybe.

If Van Persie picks up another long-term injury now, will Arsenal finish out of the English league's top four places this season and not qualify for Champions League football and its financial riches next season?

Quite likely.

Will Arsenal be sorry if Wenger cannot get Van Persie to commit to a new contract before his current one expires in 2013?

Definitely.

The departure of Cesc Fabregas this summer for guaranteed trophies with his boyhood club, Barcelona, and Samir Nasri's swoon for the petrobillions of Manchester City left Van Persie, a 2010 World Cup runner-up with the Netherlands, as Arsenal's only remaining, verified world-class player. Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott are still proving themselves.

Arsenal is without a trophy since 2005. Wenger's Catch-22 is that he needs players of Van Persie's caliber to change that, but he also needs trophies, or at least a realistic hope of winning them, to keep and to attract stars.

The reported US$5.7 million Arsenal paid in 2004 for the Netherlands international looks like a bargain now. Healthy, the 28-year-old has proven as reliable as English rain. As Arsenal fans say: "We don't need Batman, we've got Robin." A basic rule shown to be true in 24 Premier League games is that the club doesn't lose when Van Persie scores the first goal.

So far in 2011, he has scored 31 goals in 29 league games. He is only the fifth Premier League player to score 30 in a calendar year. He is the English league's leading scorer this season, putting away 13 of Arsenal's 25 goals as it has awoken from a lumbering start that included a horrific 8-2 mauling at Manchester United in August.

Van Persie's success rate in the league is outstripping even Messi's in La Liga. The world's best player has scored 29 in 31 Spanish games for Barcelona in 2011.

Van Persie's strength, quick feet and polished technique so prized in the Netherlands are often cited as reasons for his goals. But the intelligent way he spots, creates and sprints into gaps in defenses is exceptional, too.

"He is always in the right place at the right moment and he got two goals again tonight from positions that look easy but they are not. He just understands the game so well," Wenger said Wednesday after Van Persie scored both Arsenal goals in a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund that qualified his team yet again for the Champions League knockout stage.

"We hope we can keep him fit and with us for a long time."

Messi should be player of the year for 2011, just as he was in 2010 and 2009. The FIFA Ballon d'Or winner will be announced Jan. 9. But there's no real suspense. As good as the 22 other nominees are, Barcelona's star is better.

Still, Van Persie should have been on that list, too.

Pa. man acknowledges harassing Palin lawyers (AP)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? The father of a Pennsylvania man who has already acknowledged making harassing phone calls to Sarah Palin's lawyers said in a plea agreement that he made similar calls, court documents state.

Craig Christy, 48, and his son, Shawn Christy, 20, are expected to appear in federal court in Anchorage on Monday to change their pleas from not guilty, prosecutor Retta-Rae Randall said Friday.

Sentencing has not been set.

By signing the plea agreement, Craig Christy, of McAdoo, Penn., avoided what could have been a two-year prison sentence and a $250,000 fine.

The documents state that he agreed to be placed on five years of probation and have no contact with certain people whose names were not disclosed.

The Christys were arrested in August. Prosecutors say they were upset about restraining orders issued by an Alaska magistrate on behalf of Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican presidential nominee, along with her family and friends.

A restraining order was issued against Shawn Christy because he was accused of stalking Palin.

The father's restraining order was issued following accusations that he left antagonizing telephone messages with Palin's parents.

The Christys later acknowledged making harassing phone calls from Pennsylvania to Palin's lawyer.

In one obscenity-laden communication, Craig Christy threatened to kill lawyer John Tiemessen, the criminal complaint says. It says Tiemessen's offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks received hundreds of calls, sometimes in one day, with some of the calls involving threats against Tiemessen and Palin.

"Defendant knew that his actions would clog the telephone lines of the law firm and waste their time," the plea agreement states.

A call to Christy's lawyer, James Wendt, was not immediately returned Friday.

Earlier this week, Shawn Christy, who had strongly contested the protective order issued against him for allegedly stalking Palin, agreed to plead guilty to making harassing phone calls to Palin's lawyers under a similar plea agreement.

In one message he threatened to come to Alaska and rape one of the attorneys, court documents say.

Shawn Christy's plea agreement also calls for five years of probation, no jail time and conditions similar to those imposed on his father.

Under the plea deals, the Christys also cannot possess or use a computer or cellphone with access to online services without prior approval of his probation officer. If law enforcement or probation officers suspect the Christys have violated the conditions, they have agreed to allow searches of themselves, home and property at any time, the plea agreement says.

Both also will be required to complete a mental health treatment program.

Wildfire hits more than 20 homes in SW Australia (AP)

PERTH, Australia ? More than 20 homes have been destroyed or damaged by wildfire in Australia's southwest after authorities lost control of a planned forest-burning operation.

Emergency services officials say hundreds of people have been evacuated from townships in the Margaret River region of Western Australia state as more than 100 firefighters battle the blaze on Thursday, assisted by aerial water bombers.

The state government has confirmed that the blaze began Wednesday morning when a controlled burning operation in a nearby national park got out of control.

Authorities try to reduce wildfire risk by burning off dead wood and grass in controlled operations aimed at preventing the flames from spreading beyond a contained area.

Wall Street pushes higher after rough week

By msnbc.com news services

U.S. stocks edged higher Friday, but major indexes are still poised to end their worst week since September.

Worries about Europe's debt crisis flared up again Friday after Italy was forced to pay 7.8 percent to borrow for two years at a debt auction. It's another sign that investors are growing increasingly hesitant to lend to Europe's third-largest economy.

The Dow remains down 3.7 percent for the week, putting the average on track for its worst week since late September.

The euro slipped to $1.32 and is now down 2 percent this week against the dollar. The drop puts the euro at its lowest level since Oct. 6.

Higher interest rates on government debt backed by Italy, Spain and other European countries have rattled stock markets in recent weeks. When borrowing costs climb above the 7 percent threshold, it deepens fears about a government's ability to manage its debts. Greece, Ireland and Portugal were forced to seek financial lifelines when their interest rates crossed the same mark.

Markets have been battered this week as governments in Europe and the U.S. struggle to tackle their debts. The Dow lost 248 points on Monday as a Congressional committee failed to reach a deal to cut federal budget deficits. It plunged another 236 points Wednesday after investors balked at buying German government debt.

In morning trading, AT&T's stock was up half of 1 percent. The company said Thursday that it's budgeting to pay $4 billion in break-up fees if its attempted $39 billion takeover of T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom falls apart.

The Friday after Thanksgiving marks the start of the holiday shopping season and is busiest day of the year for retailers. A record number of people are expected to show up at stores this weekend to take advantage of deep discounts. The National Retail Federation estimates that 152 million people will go shopping over the three days starting on Friday. That would be an increase of 10 percent from last year.

Trading will end at 1 p.m. ET. U.S. markets were closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Packers Beat Lions 27-15 To Improve To 11-0

DETROIT -- The Green Bay Packers are working on a perfect season. The Detroit Lions have plenty to work on following a slew of physical and mental mistakes.

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and the Packers built a big lead in the third quarter, taking advantage of Ndamukong Suh's ejection and beating the Detroit Lions 27-15 Thursday.

The defending champion Packers are 11-0 for the first time in franchise history and have won a team-record 17 straight, including the playoffs.

Green Bay easily passed what was expected to be one of its toughest tests toward joining the 2007 New England Patriots as the NFL's only teams to have 16-0 regular seasons.

The Lions fell to 7-4 ? losing a franchise-record eighth straight Thanksgiving game ? and added to their misery in ugly fashion.

Suh was tossed for stepping on Evan Dietrich-Smith's arm in the third quarter and Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions.

The Packers turned Stafford's interceptions into two TDs and a field goal, going ahead 24-0 late in the third.

Detroit finally scored when Keiland Williams ran for a 16-yard TD with 13:11 left and added a 2-point conversion pass from Stafford to Titus Young. It also scored a meaningless TD on Stafford's 3-yard pass to Calvin Johnson with 11 seconds left.

The Lions raised expectations for their ability to compete and entertain during their annual showcase after losing the last seven games by three-plus TDs on average.

They kept it close early ? in a punt- and penalty-filled first half ? then simply couldn't keep up with Rodgers' passing attack and failed to stay disciplined.

Rogers was 22 of 32 for 307 yards with two TDs ? a 3-yard pass to Greg Jennings with 4:51 left in the first half to make it 7-0 and 65-yard pass to James Jones in the third for a 21-0 lead. He fumbled once, but a teammate recovered the football.

"Second half, we got under center a little bit more, started running some regular offense and just kind of got things going," Rodgers said. "We had a good bead on what they're going to do there in the third quarter and James ran a nice post route and I didn't underthrow him too bad and he ran in for a touchdown. That kind of got us going."

Stafford was 32 of 45 for 276 yards with a TD in the final seconds and three interceptions, getting picked off by Charles Woodson, Clay Matthews and Robert Francois.

Detroit became the NFL's first team to win three games in a season after trailing by 17 points with Sunday's comeback win over Carolina, but the Packers proved they weren't as vulnerable as the Panthers.

Green Bay's winning streak, including its run in the 2010 playoffs, equals the streak the Oakland Raiders had during the 1976-77 seasons.

New England won 18 straight during the 2007 season only to lose to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.

The Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints were the last teams to start a season 11-0, pulling off the feat two years ago.

Detroit's best shot to beat the Packers ? as it did at home last year ? was to knock Rodgers out of the game like they did last year. The Lions gave that tactic their best shot, hitting him even if he had gotten rid of the ball. Kyle Vanden Bosch was flagged for one of those late hits and could've drawn a penalty for doing even more to the star quarterback on the same drive.

Rodgers refused to be rattled, kept his cool and won ? again.

Turkey 911! Butterball's Hotline Saves Your Thanksgiving

In her nine years at Butterball's Turkey Talk hotline (1-800-BUTTERBALL), Phyllis Kramer has heard every turkey problem imaginable?and some it's practically impossible to picture. Once, she says, a whole roomful of people called her on speakerphone. The turkey was on the table, they were ready to eat, and they were angry.

"They said, 'We're trying to carve this turkey, but there's no meat on the bones,'" Kramer says. She thought for a moment, then suggested they turn it over. Sure enough, they had cooked the turkey upside-down. "You could hear them cheering and clapping," she says.

Once, a man called who was planning to propose to his girlfriend in front of their families. He wanted to know if he could put the engagement ring inside the turkey. "I don't know about you," says Kramer, "but I don't think she'd be too pleased to dig it out of there. We talked him through doing it a different way. But it would have been a memorable engagement!"

Not all Thanksgiving Day dilemmas can be so easily fixed, but most can be prevented. Here are the three most common disasters reported through Butterball's turkey hotline?and how to avoid them.

Disaster: "I'm ready to cook, but the turkey is still frozen."

Scenario: Once a man called the hotline, panicked, because he'd buried his turkey in the snow in his yard, having run out of room in his freezer?then couldn't relocate it. As Butterball has yet to equip their turkeys with GPS, Kramer acknowledged she couldn't help him. A much more common problem, Kramer says, is that people don't take the turkey out of the freezer early enough.

Advice: In the refrigerator, a turkey will thaw at a rate of about four pounds a day?so a 20-pound turkey needs to start thawing five days in advance. If you already missed that window, don't fear. There are a couple of tricks to speed up the thawing process. The quickest technique, Kramer says, is to thaw the turkey in cold water. Place it breast side down, unwrapped, in a large vessel like a sink or cooler, then cover it completely with cold water. Change the water frequently. This method takes about 30 minutes per pound.

Disaster: "I can't tell if the turkey is done."

Scenario: One Thanksgiving Day, a young woman called the hotline from a hiding place in her hallway. "My mother and my mother-in-law are in the kitchen," she whispered to Kramer. "One says the turkey is done and one says it isn't. What do I do?"

Advice: A thermometer is the surest way to resolve this kind of squabble, Kramer says. A fully cooked bird should register 170 degrees in the breast and 180 degrees in the thigh. Turkey stuffing should reach 165 degrees to ensure it's safe to eat. To avoid overcooking the breast meat, Kramer suggests tenting it with aluminum foil about two-thirds of the way through roasting.

Of course, this advice won't help if the thermometer is faulty. If it's been rolling around the drawer for a while, test it prior to Thanksgiving by holding it with a pair of tongs in boiling water. If it reads 212 degrees, you can trust it.

Disaster: "I overcooked the turkey."

Scenario: "I talked to a woman about an hour ago," Kramer says. "She was going to get up at 4 am to put the turkey in the oven." You may remember your grandmother setting an alarm for the crack of dawn to do the same thing. Back then, it was a tough old bird (the turkey, not Grandma), and it was probably cooked in one of those old-style, high-sided roasting pans?both factors that dramatically increase the required cooking time. Turkeys are now younger and more tender.

Advice: The best way to cook a turkey today is what's called "shallow roasting," Kramer says. Put the turkey in a low-sided roasting pan, on a rack if possible. Brush it with oil and pop it in a 325-degree oven. A 10- to 18-pound turkey, unstuffed, will take between three and three and a half hours to fully cook.

Oil falls to $97 amid weak US economy growth (AP)

SINGAPORE ? Oil prices fell to near $97 a barrel Wednesday in Asia as investors eyed weaker U.S. economic growth and fresh sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was down $1.13 at $96.88 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.09 to settle at $98.01 in New York on Tuesday.

Brent crude for January delivery was down 26 cents at $108.77 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange in London.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the U.S. economy grew 2 percent in the third quarter, less than the preliminary result of 2.5 percent it announced last month.

Investors also fretted that new international sanctions on Iran could reduce the flow of oil from the world's fourth biggest oil producer.

The latest U.S. crude supply data was mixed. The American Petroleum Institute said late Tuesday that crude inventories fell 5.6 million barrels last week while analysts surveyed by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos., had predicted crude levels would be unchanged.

However, inventories of gasoline jumped 5.4 million barrels last week while distillates dropped 900,000 barrels, the API said.

The Energy Department's Energy Information Administration reports its weekly supply data later Wednesday.

Some analysts expect recovering crude output from Libya to boost global supplies and help push prices down.

"Continued turmoil in the global economy, diminishing energy demand and the steady return of Libyan crude to the markets will apply downward pressure on energy pricing through the end of this year and the start of 2012," said Richard Soultanian of NUS Consulting.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil fell 2.2 cents to $3.02 per gallon and gasoline futures slid 3.5 cents to $2.53 per gallon. Natural gas dropped 0.3 cent at $3.41 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Bravo ton keeps Windies on course for big total (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Darren Bravo completed his third test hundred as West Indies marched towards a big first innings total, reaching 378 for three at lunch on the second day of the third and final test against India on Wednesday.

Resuming on 267-2, the visitors added 111 runs to their overnight total in the morning session for the loss of Kirk Edwards' wicket.

Bravo (105) and Kieran Powell (38) were the unbeaten batsmen together at lunch as West Indies, trailing 2-0 in the series, improved their chances of avoiding a whitewash.

The 22-year-old left-hander brought up his second successive ton with an elegant square-driven boundary off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and celebrated by kissing his bat before raising it aloft along with his cap.

The cousin of former West Indies batting great Brian Lara has hit 12 boundaries during his 169-ball stay, the only blemish coming on Tuesday, when Rahul Dravid dropped him at slip on 33 off left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha's bowling.

Picking up where they left off, Bravo and Edwards added 164 for the third wicket before the latter edged paceman Ishant Sharma to captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps on the stroke of the first drinks break of the day.

Bravo then added 64 for the unbroken fourth wicket with Powell, who replaced the injured Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the team, as the Indian bowlers were made to toil on an easy-paced surface at the Wankhede Stadium.

The stylish Bravo, who made 136 in the second innings in the last test in Kolkata, started briskly and hit debutant paceman Varun Aaron for two straight-driven boundaries off the first two deliveries of the morning.

Sharma was the pick of India's bowlers and beat the edge on a number of occasions, but failed to make any further inroads into the batting order following the dismissal of Edwards.

China says it opposes Western sanctions on Iran (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said it opposes unilateral sanctions against Iran, days after several Western countries announced new measures against Tehran to halt its nuclear program.

The United States, Britain and Canada announced new measures against Iran's energy and financial sectors on Monday and France proposed "unprecedented" new sanctions, including freezing the assets of its central bank and suspending purchases of its oil.

"China is always against unilateral sanctions against Iran and is even more opposed to the expansion of such sanctions," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told reporters at a regular press briefing, reiterating the need for negotiations.

"We believe pressure and sanctions will not fundamentally solve the Iranian issue, but will complicate the issue. Intensifying confrontation is not conducive to the region's peace and stability," Liu said.

Iran has dismissed the new wave of sanctions, saying the West's attempts to isolate its economy would only serve to unite Iranians behind their government's nuclear program.

The latest sanctions were prompted by a U.N. nuclear agency report that suggested Iran had worked on an atomic bomb design. Tehran maintains its work is entirely peaceful and said the report was based on false Western intelligence.

But the series of unilateral steps were meant to pressure Iran to suspend the nuclear program before it gets the bomb. Israel and Washington say they do not rule out military strikes if other efforts fail.

Critics of the sanctions said they would fail to stop Iran's nuclear work and would play into the hands of a government that wears its hostility to Washington as a badge of pride.

The moves by the Western governments came outside of the United Nations, where Russia and China -- both permanent U.N. Security Council members with veto power -- agree that Iran should not be subjected to sanctions.

Russia called the U.S. moves "unacceptable.

China, which has kept close ties with Iran, has backed past U.N. Security Council resolutions criticizing Iran's position on nuclear issues and authorizing limited sanctions.

But Beijing has repeatedly resisted Western proposals for sanctions that could seriously curtail its energy and economic ties with Iran, China's third-largest crude oil supplier.

It has said Chinese firms will business dealings with Iran should not be targeted.

Iran shipped 20.3 million tons of crude oil in the first nine months of the year, up by almost a third on the same period last year, according to Chinese data.

Tips to keep your pets healthy this Thanksgiving | SCNOW

We'd give our faithful?canine friends the world if we could, but every year some of us tend to settle for the delicious melange of Thanksgiving scraps that accumulate?at the end of the big meal.?Little do we know that the same tasty bits and peices we cast under the table for Fido could also harm and even kill most domesticated animals.

Diana Guerrero, nationally rekowned animal expert and author,?lists a few preventative steps that every loving animal owner can take this year to keep everyone happy and healthty:

  • Rich, fatty foods (turkey skins, gravy, etc,) can contribute to pancreatitis. This inflammation of the digestive gland is painful and can be serious--requiring emergency veterinary assistance.
  • Cooked bones can splinter and cause tears or obstruction in a pet's digestive tract.
  • Baking strings, if ingested, can create trouble if ingested by your pet.
  • Onions in holiday stuffing can lead to canine anemia if consumed by your dog.
  • Grapes and raisin toxins can cause kidney failure in pets.
  • Ingesting chocolate can kill your pet.
  • Caffeine and alcohol are also toxic for pets.
  • Keep all goodies out of reach!

Remember, as much as you rely on the love and attention of your pets?they, too, look to you to take care of them and make sure they have everything they need...and not necessarily every they want.

Study Links Coffee to Lower Risk of Endometrial Cancer (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Nov. 22 (HealthDay News) -- Women who drink moderate to high amounts of coffee may reduce their risk for endometrial cancer, new research reveals.

The finding stems from what investigators call the largest study to date to explore the impact of coffee and tea on the risk of endometrial cancer, which is cancer that originates in the lining of the uterus.

The study found that women who consume four or more cups of caffeinated coffee per day appear to lower their risk for endometrial cancer by 25 percent, relative to women who drink less than one cup a day.

Drinking fewer than four cups a day did not appear to offer any preventative benefit, however. Nor did drinking tea.

But there was some indication that decaffeinated coffee might be helpful, as drinking two or more cups of decaf daily was linked (although only tentatively) to a 22 percent drop in endometrial cancer risk.

Still, "this study does not prove cause and effect," cautioned study co-author Dr. Edward Giovannucci, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. "But this observation has been suggested previously, and there's strong reason now to believe that this association is real."

Giovannucci pointed to a number of potential explanations. "One is that women with higher levels of estrogen and insulin are at a higher risk for endometrial cancer, and coffee seems to reduce levels of both," he said. "Also women with diabetes also face a much higher risk, and coffee has been associated with a lower risk for diabetes. So there are several factors that could be involved.

"We also think that any risk reduction is probably related to something other than caffeine," he added. "Because coffee is a fairly complex beverage with literally thousands of compounds. In fact, coffee has one of the highest concentrations of antioxidants, and any number of those could have a beneficial aspect."

The findings appear in the current issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

The authors point out that endometrial cancer is currently the most prevalent gynecologic cancer among American women.

In addition to routine exercise and weight maintenance, researchers have theorized that certain aspects of diet might play a role in endometrial cancer prevention.

Coffee has been highlighted as a possible game-changer, given its impact on circulating hormone levels. The authors note that recent studies from Japan and Sweden support this conjecture.

To further explore coffee's potential, the research team analyzed data that had previously been collected by the Nurses' Health Study .

Initially launched in 1976, the study as a whole involved women between the ages of 30 and 55, residing in 11 different states.

The authors focused on the coffee-drinking habits of roughly 67,500 study participants, conducting surveys at two-year intervals to track endometrial cancer incidence over 26 years. Dietary habits were assessed in surveys that were completed once every four years between 1980 and 2002.

The team observed 672 cases of endometrial cancer.

After accounting for a range of factors (such as smoking habits, body mass index and alcohol consumption) the authors found that four or more cups of caffeinated coffee was "significantly" associated with a 25 percent drop in endometrial cancer risk.

That said, the team hesitated to endorse high levels of coffee consumption, noting that the apparent benefit could be negated among those who routinely add cream and sugar to their cup of joe.

Dr. Janice Dutcher, director of immunotherapy at St Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, suggested the findings should not been interpreted as anything more than an "interesting hypothesis."

"I'm skeptical," she said. "My skepticism comes from the fact that a variety of things have been associated with cancer at one point, and then not associated with cancer later on. Twenty years ago it was thought coffee was the cause of pancreatic cancer. And to isolate one dietary factor from all the other things that people take in is very complicated. So while I'm sure this is a carefully done study with good methodology, I would be very careful about drawing any conclusions."

University hit by new climate leak ahead of talks (AP)

LONDON ? The British university whose stolen emails caused a global climate science controversy in 2009 says those behind the breach have apparently released a second and potentially far larger batch of old messages.

University of East Anglia spokesman Simon Dunford said that while academics didn't have the chance yet to examine the roughly 5,000 emails apparently dumped into the public domain Tuesday, a small sample examined by the university "appears to be genuine."

The university said in a statement that the emails did not appear to be the result of a new breach. Instead, the statement said that the emails appeared to have been stolen two years ago and held back until now "to cause maximum disruption" to the imminent U.N. climate talks next week in Durban, South Africa.

If that is confirmed, the timing and nature of the leak would follow the pattern set by the so-called "Climategate" emails, which caught prominent scientists stonewalling critics and discussing ways to keep opponents' research out of peer-reviewed journals.

Those hostile to mainstream climate science claimed the exchanges proved that the threat of global warming was being hyped, and their publication helped destabilize the failed U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen, Denmark, which followed several weeks later.

Climategate also dealt a blow to the reputation of the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit, which is one of the world's leading centers for the study of how world temperatures have varied over time.

Although a host of reviews have since vindicated the unit's science, some of its practices ? in particular efforts to hide data from opponents ? have come under strong criticism. The university says it is now much more open about what it does.

The content of the new batch of emails couldn't be immediately verified ? The Associated Press has not yet been able to secure a copy ? but climate skeptic websites carried what they said were excerpts.

Although their context couldn't be determined, the excerpts appeared to show climate scientists talking in conspiratorial tones about ways to promote their agenda and freeze out those they disagree with. There are several mentions of "the cause" and discussions of ways to shield emails from freedom of information requests.

Penn State University Prof. Michael Mann ? a prominent player in the earlier controversy whose name also appears in the latest leak ? described Tuesday's development as "a truly pathetic episode," blaming agents of the fossil fuel industry for "smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails."

In an email to the AP, he said that the real story behind the leak was "an attempt to dig out 2-year-old turkey from Thanksgiving '09. That's how desperate climate change deniers have become."

Bob Ward, with the London School of Economics' Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change, said in an email that he wasn't surprised by the leak.

"The selective presentation of old email messages is clearly designed to mislead the public and politicians about the strength of the evidence for man-made climate change," he said. "But the fact remains that there is very strong evidence that most the indisputable warming of the Earth over the past half century is due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities."

The source of the latest leaked emails was unclear. The perpetrator of the original hack has yet to be unmasked, although British police have said their investigation is still active.

IAEA head urges 'fresh thinking' at Mideast talks (AP)

VIENNA ? The U.N. nuclear agency chief is urging Israel and Arab nations to come to the table with open minds at a meeting on ways to establish a nuclear-free zone in the Mideast.

Wide chasms separate the two sides. Israel says peace must be established in the Mideast before talks on such a zone can be concretely discussed. The Arabs say the two topics are independent.

International Atomic Energy Agency chief Yukiya Amano said at the opening Monday he hopes the meeting "will nurture fresh thinking."

Organizers caution against high expectations.

Almost 100 nations are attending. Iran is boycotting the meeting, which will hear presentations on already established nuclear-free zones.

The Arabs view Israel's undeclared nuclear arsenal as the greatest threat. Israel says it is Iran.
