Nexus 4 returns to Google Play store in Canada at 3PM Eastern today

It certainly hasn't been the easiest phone to get a hold for for those interested, but those in Canada now at least know when they'll have another chance to grab a Nexus 4. Google's today sent out emails informing prospective customers that the phone will again be available in the Canadian Play store starting at 3PM Eastern (noon Pacific time), although it's of course making no guarantees about quantities. It also hasn't specified if both the 8GB and 16GB models will be available, but there's now less than an hour 'til we find out.

Complex chemistry within the Martian soil: No definitive detection of organics yet

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) ? NASA's Mars Curiosity rover has used its full array of instruments to analyze Martian soil for the first time, and found a complex chemistry within the Martian soil. Water and sulfur and chlorine-containing substances, among other ingredients, showed up in samples Curiosity's arm delivered to an analytical laboratory inside the rover.

Detection of the substances during this early phase of the mission demonstrates the laboratory's capability to analyze diverse soil and rock samples over the next two years. Scientists also have been verifying the capabilities of the rover's instruments.

Curiosity is the first Mars rover able to scoop soil into analytical instruments. The specific soil sample came from a drift of windblown dust and sand called "Rocknest." The site lies in a relatively flat part of Gale Crater still miles away from the rover's main destination on the slope of a mountain called Mount Sharp. The rover's laboratory includes the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) suite and the Chemistry and Mineralogy (CheMin) instrument. SAM used three methods to analyze gases given off from the dusty sand when it was heated in a tiny oven. One class of substances SAM checks for is organic compounds -- carbon-containing chemicals that can be ingredients for life.

"We have no definitive detection of Martian organics at this point, but we will keep looking in the diverse environments of Gale Crater," said SAM Principal Investigator Paul Mahaffy of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Curiosity's APXS instrument and the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) camera on the rover's arm confirmed Rocknest has chemical-element composition and textural appearance similar to sites visited by earlier NASA Mars rovers Pathfinder, Spirit and Opportunity.

Curiosity's team selected Rocknest as the first scooping site because it has fine sand particles suited for scrubbing interior surfaces of the arm's sample-handling chambers. Sand was vibrated inside the chambers to remove residue from Earth. MAHLI close-up images of Rocknest show a dust-coated crust one or two sand grains thick, covering dark, finer sand.

"Active drifts on Mars look darker on the surface," said MAHLI Principal Investigator Ken Edgett, of Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego."This is an older drift that has had time to be inactive, letting the crust form and dust accumulate on it."

CheMin's examination of Rocknest samples found the composition is about half common volcanic minerals and half non-crystalline materials such as glass. SAM added information about ingredients present in much lower concentrations and about ratios of isotopes. Isotopes are different forms of the same element and can provide clues about environmental changes. The water seen by SAM does not mean the drift was wet. Water molecules bound to grains of sand or dust are not unusual, but the quantity seen was higher than anticipated.

SAM tentatively identified the oxygen and chlorine compound perchlorate. This is a reactive chemical previously found in arctic Martian soil by NASA's Phoenix Lander. Reactions with other chemicals heated in SAM formed chlorinated methane compounds -- one-carbon organics that were detected by the instrument. The chlorine is of Martian origin, but it is possible the carbon may be of Earth origin, carried by Curiosity and detected by SAM's high sensitivity design.

"We used almost every part of our science payload examining this drift," said Curiosity Project Scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. "The synergies of the instruments and richness of the data sets give us great promise for using them at the mission's main science destination on Mount Sharp."

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory Project is using Curiosity to assess whether areas inside Gale Crater ever offered a habitable environment for microbes. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

UCI names 3-member panel to probe Armstrong links

GENEVA (AP) ? British judge Phillip Otton will chair the three-member panel investigating the International Cycling Union's links to the Lance Armstrong doping case.

The UCI, cycling's governing body, announced the independent commission on Friday, saying British Paralympic great Tanni Grey-Thompson and Australian lawyer Malcolm Holmes also will serve on the panel that will meet in London from April 9-26 and issue a report by June 1.

"The appointment of these three eminent figures demonstrates clearly that the UCI wants to get to the bottom of the Lance Armstrong affair and put cycling back on the right track," UCI President Pat McQuaid said in a statement.

Otton's sports legal cases include a Premier League relegation dispute involving Carlos Tevez, and Chelsea's tactics in trying to lure Ashley Cole from Arsenal.

Grey-Thompson is a 10-time Paralympic gold medalist in wheelchair racing who is now a lawmaker in the upper chamber of Britain's Parliament.

The UCI asked Court of Arbitration for Sport board president John Coates to help create a panel to investigate suspicions raised by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's damning report into widespread doping by Armstrong's teams during his seven Tour de France victories from 1999-2005.

Armstrong was stripped of seven Tour de France titles and banned for life.

McQuaid said the UCI had no part in choosing the three officials, who have drawn up the parameters for their investigation, which could be a key to rebuilding ? or wrecking ? the governing body's damaged credibility.

The commission will closely scrutinize McQuaid, who was elected as UCI president weeks after Armstrong first retired in 2005, and his predecessor, Hein Verbruggen, in their working relations with Armstrong.

The governing body denies claims made by former Armstrong teammates to USADA that it covered up suspicious samples from Armstrong in exchange for cash, or that the American rider enjoyed special protection.

"The commission's report and recommendations are critical to restoring confidence in the sport of cycling and in the UCI as its governing body," McQuaid said. "We will cooperate fully with the commission and provide them with whatever they need to conduct their inquiry and we urge all other interested stakeholders to do the same."

The UCI pledged to fund the commission's work and will be legally represented at the London hearings. It did not say whether the sessions will be held in public or behind closed doors.

"The costs of the independent commission will be a significant burden on the UCI," McQuaid said. "However, it is clear that only such a decisive and transparent examination of the past will answer our critics by thoroughly examining our assertion that the UCI's anti-doping procedures are and have been among the most innovative and stringent in sport."

The panel will examine whether the UCI's doping rules "were inadequate or were not enforced with sufficient rigor"; if the UCI had "any reliable evidence or information" that Armstrong was doping; and if it "adequately cooperated with, assisted in and reacted to the USADA" investigation.

A potential conflict of interest between the UCI's role promoting the sport and its duty to police anti-doping will also be examined.

A multi-wavelength view of radio galaxy Hercules A

Spectacular jets powered by the gravitational energy of a super massive black hole in the core of the elliptical galaxy Hercules A illustrate the combined imaging power of two of astronomy's cutting-edge tools, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, and the recently upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico.

Some two billion light-years away, the yellowish elliptical galaxy in the center of the image appears quite ordinary as seen by Hubble in visible wavelengths of light. The galaxy is roughly 1,000 times more massive than the Milky Way and harbors a 2.5-billion-solar-mass central black hole that is 1,000 times more massive than the black hole in the Milky Way. But the innocuous-looking galaxy, also known as 3C 348, has long been known as the brightest radio-emitting object in the constellation Hercules. Emitting nearly a billion times more power in radio wavelengths than our Sun, the galaxy is one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the entire sky.

The VLA radio data reveal enormous, optically invisible jets that, at one-and-a-half million light-years wide, dwarf the visible galaxy from which they emerge. The jets are very-high-energy plasma beams, subatomic particles and magnetic fields shot at nearly the speed of light from the vicinity of the black hole. The outer portions of both jets show unusual ring-like structures suggesting a history of multiple outbursts from the super massive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The innermost parts of the jets are not visible because of the extreme velocity of the material, which causes relativistic effects that beam the light away from us. Far from the galaxy, the jets become unstable and break up into the rings and wisps.

The entire radio source is surrounded by a very hot, X-ray-emitting cloud of gas, not seen in this optical-radio composite.

Hubble's view of the field also shows a companion elliptical galaxy very close to the center of the optical-radio source, which may be merging with the central galaxy. Several other elliptical and spiral galaxies that are visible in the Hubble data may be members of a cluster of galaxies.Hercules A is by far the brightest and most massive galaxy in the cluster.

LinkedIn recently launched a new API program, an enhancement to its LinkedIn Ad platform, to help B2B marketers bring a social element to targeting specific customers, uncovering leads, and automating campaigns.

?One of the big things that we see is...[that] people that aren't doing general consumer-based advertising for CPG, or entertainment, or commerce, but are actually trying to do B2B type advertising campaigns to drive leads and customers of technology or white papers, or free trial offers,? says Calvin Lui, president and chief strategy officer of social marketing technology company Unified?one ?of the first three organizations to take part in the program. ?What LinkedIn offers to that type of community is a true pay channel to reach audiences of a specific mentality with a specific type of targeting profile that you just can't find in consumer-oriented social networks.?

Along with Unified, Adobe and Bizo comprise the remaining two companies to test-drive the new program. Lui says that Unified has been purchasing media from the social network since its launch in January 2012.

?We've been working with LinkedIn on the API program for a little while now,? Lui says. ?What it enables us to do is automate a lot of the leader buying and campaign reporting that we've been doing manually through the editor process.?

Using the new API program, Lui says, B2B marketers can create profiles based on company type, industry type, company size defined by employees, and job titles to better target specific customers. The interaction between LinkedIn's niche customers is one of the traits that Lui says distinguishes it from other social networks.

?One of the great things about LinkedIn is the type of audience that they bring, and the engagement model they bring with folks from their network is very unique,? he says. ?When you think about B2B advertisers that want to do company profiling, or job title profiling, or any of the professional marketing or professional business-type targeting, LinkedIn is by far the best network out there to be able to bring that to market."

Lui adds that Unified intends to promote the new API program in the 2013 year.

?We're partners with Salesforce and Oracle. Their customer bases are very much B2B; many of their customers have asked us if we can help some of their B2B-type marketing programs,? Lui says. ?Traditionally, that's been done through email, trade shows, [and] lead generation programs. But now, we can bring social capabilities to those marketers that have this type of demand to do specific types of marketing and measurement all the way back to ROI.?

This isn't LinkedIn's first attempt at wooing B2B marketers into its social space. The social network recently released its IT Purchasing Goes Social study, which examines the extent to which LinkedIn influences IT decision makers. According to the study, 88% of IT decision makers pay LinkedIn a visit monthly, and 85% say they use social networks for work-related purposes.

LinkedIn has opened the door for companies to join Adobe, Bizo, and Unified in the API program and is now currently accepting and evaluating applications.

Mauritanian president says returning to France for treatment

NOUAKCHOTT (Reuters) - Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz said on Thursday he will once again travel to France for medical treatment for a bullet wound he suffered in mid-October.

The Western ally in the fight against al Qaeda in Africa already spent nearly six weeks in France recuperating from the wound to his abdomen, which his government said was caused when a Mauritanian patrol accidentally fired on his car.

He returned to Mauritania's capital, Nouakchott, last Saturday, easing fears concerning the state of his health and uncertainty over who was managing the country - which has suffered two coups since 2005.

"I leave tomorrow for appointments in France," Abdel Aziz said in a press conference broadcast on national television. "I need to do further testing and X-rays. I will leave only for a few days," he said.

He has repeatedly said that he has remained in charge of the country throughout the ordeal, and that his injury was not life threatening.

Straddling black and Arab Africa on the continent's west coast, Mauritania, a country of 3.2 million people, is an iron ore, copper and gold producer with a budding off-shore oil and gas sector.

The country has launched at least two airstrikes on Islamist camps in neighboring Mali since 2010, raising fears of a fresh attack on Mauritanian soil.

The northern two-thirds of Mali is now in the hands of al Qaeda-linked rebels since a coup earlier this year, and African and western governments are mulling an international intervention to retake the zone.

On Thursday, rebels from Islamist group Ansar Dine took control of a Malian town near the Mauritanian border after ousting Tuareg rebels from the MNLA separatist group.

China to launch new manned spaceship in 2013: Xinhua

BEIJING (Reuters) - China plans to launch its Shenzhou 10 spacecraft in early June 2013, one of the senior officials in charge of the manned space program said on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The launch marks another step forward in Beijing's ambitions for a bigger presence in space that include the construction of a space station by 2020.

The crew could include one female and two male astronauts, who are scheduled to enter the Tiangong 1 space lab module, according to Niu Hongguang, deputy commander-in-chief of China's manned space program.

Niu made the remarks on the sidelines of the Communist Party congress which is meeting to choose a new leadership.

The new plan follows the successful flight of the Shenzhou 9 spacecraft, which returned to Earth in late June, that put China's first woman in space and completed a manned docking test critical to Beijing's space station plan.

China is far from catching up with the established space superpowers, the United States and Russia, but the Shenzhou 9 marked China's fourth manned space mission since 2003, and comes as budget restraints and shifting priorities have held back U.S. manned space launches.

The United States will not test a new rocket to take people into space until 2017, and Russia has said manned missions are no longer a priority.

China plans an unmanned moon landing and deployment of a moon rover and its scientists have raised the possibility of sending a man to the moon, but not before 2020.

Quasar may be embedded in unusually dusty galaxy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Hubble astronomers have looked at one of the most distant and brightest quasars in the universe and are surprised by what they did not see: the underlying host galaxy of stars feeding the quasar. The best explanation is that the galaxy is shrouded in so much dust that the stars are completely hidden everywhere. Astronomers believe that the James Webb Space Telescope will reveal the galaxy.

All but the very first galaxies contain some dust -- the early universe was dust-free until the first generation of stars started making dust through nuclear fusion. As these stars aged and burned out, they filled interstellar space with this dust as they lost their atmospheres. The quasar dates back to an early time in the universe's history -- less than one billion years after the big bang -- but was known to contain large amounts of dust from previous sub-millimeter observations. What surprised the researchers is how completely the dust is shrouding starlight within the galaxy -- none of the starlight seems to be leaking out from around the quasar.

Quasars (short for quasi-stellar object) are the brilliant cores of galaxies where infalling material fuels a super-massive black hole. The black hole is so engorged that some of the energy escapes as powerful blasts of radiation from the surrounding disk of accreting material. This light can appear as a jet-like feature. If the beam shines in Earth's direction the "accretion disk" and jet surrounding the super-massive black hole can appear as a quasar that can outshine its surrounding galaxy a hundred or a thousand times.

The team speculates that the black hole is devouring the equivalent mass of a few suns per year. It may have been eating at a more voracious rate earlier to bulk up to an estimated mass of three billion solar masses in just a few hundred million years.

"If you want to hide the stars with dust, you need to make lots of short-lived massive stars earlier on that lose their mass at the end of their lifetime. You need to do this very quickly, so supernovae and other stellar mass-loss channels can fill the environment with dust very quickly," said Rogier Windhorst of Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe, Ariz. "You also have to be forming them throughout the galaxy to spread the dust throughout the galaxy," added Matt Mechtley, also of ASU.

The quasar was first identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Only a handful of these very distant ultra-luminous quasars were found by the SDSS in about one quarter of the whole sky. Follow-up observations at sub-millimeter wavelengths detected significant dust within the galaxy, but did not show how and where dust was distributed, and if or where star-clusters might be visible through the dust. Most nearby galaxies -- even if rather dusty -- still have some regions where stars or star-clusters poke through the dust.

Hubble was used to very carefully subtract light from the quasar image and look for the glow of surrounding stars. The team accomplished this by looking at the glow of a reference star in the sky near the quasar and using it as a template to remove the quasar light from the image. Once the quasar was removed, no significant underlying starlight was detected. The underlying galaxy's stars could have been easily detected, had they been present and relatively unobscured by dust in at least some locations.

"It is remarkable that Hubble didn't find any of the underlying galaxy," said Windhorst. "The underlying galaxy is everywhere much fainter than expected, and therefore must be in a very dusty environment throughout. It's one of the most rip-roaring forest fires in the universe. It's creating so much smoke that you're not seeing any starlight, anywhere. The forest fire is complete, not a tree is spared."

"Because we don't see the stars, we can rule out that the galaxy that hosts this quasar is a normal galaxy," said Mechtley. "It's among the dustiest galaxies in the universe, and the dust is so widely distributed that not even a single clump of stars is peeking through. We're very close to a plausible detection, in the sense that if we had gone a factor of two deeper we might have detected some light from its young stars, even in such a dusty galaxy."

This result was published in the Sept. 10 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters in a paper by M. Mechtley, R. Windhorst, and an international team of collaborators.

NASA's planned James Webb Space Telescope will pursue this object. "The Webb telescope is designed to make a definitive detection of this," said Windhorst. We will get solid detections of the stars with Webb's better sensitivity to longer wavelengths of light, which will better probe the dusty regions in these young galaxies.

The Webb telescope will also have the infrared sensitivity to peer all the way back to 200 million years after the big bang. If galaxies started forming stars at this early epoch, Webb is designed and being built to detect them.

The Hubble Space Telescope is a project of international cooperation between NASA and the European Space Agency. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., manages the telescope. The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Md., conducts Hubble science operations and is the science and mission operations center for the James Webb Space Telescope. STScI is operated for NASA by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., in Washington, D.C.

Smaller iPad expected Tuesday, but at what price?

NEW YORK (AP) ? The price tag remains a big question mark as Apple prepares Tuesday to unveil what is expected to be a smaller iPad.

In the case of the "iPad Mini" (the real name is not known), tech bloggers and analysts expect a device with a screen measuring 7.85 inches on the diagonal, making it about half the size of the regular iPad. It would be slightly larger than the 7-inch tablets it's presumably designed to compete with, including Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire and Google Inc.'s Nexus 7.

Apple Inc. is expected to unveil the new device during a presentation in San Jose, Calif., starting at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT).

A Hands on Approach to Ministering to Seniors :: New Hope Digital

The following is condensed from an article by Joyce Mitchell. Now retired, Joyce served as the staff Leadership Development Team team leader for WMU, a one-million member nonprofit organization. She is a graduate of Wayne State University and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She remains busy in her retirement, writing, traveling and volunteering.

In 2000, approximately 605 million people in the world were 60 or older. By 2050, that number is expected to be close to 2 billion. At that time, seniors will outnumber children 14 and under for the first time in history.[1]

The information below is designed to guide your launch of a ministry that connects with seniors.

Who are seniors?

Who seniors have been all their lives and how they have dealt with problems before old age will largely determine what they are like after they reach old age. Seniors face a laundry list of ?adjustments? as they mature, which may include:

• Children who grow up and leave home
• Death of spouse
• Job relinquished to retirement
• Severed ties with friends due to death or geographical distance
• Loss of status
• Perception of others that they are weak and inferior
• Decrease in alertness or ability to remember
• Physical disabilities
• Chronic brain syndrome and/or Alzheimer?s
• Depression
• Need for institutional care

Obviously, these serious issues will stimulate questions such as: How can we help seniors maintain an appropriate level of independence? How can we bring comfort and relief to these men and women? How can we share the good news of Jesus Christ with them, whether in health or sickness?

Of course, there have been significant paradigm shifts in how senior adults are viewed within the church.[2] Once, church leaders might have felt the need to focus solely on ministry to senior adults. Today, seniors are known to be significant contributors in ministry to others as well. Who better to lead a ministry to seniors than seniors?

Those who are most successful in working with seniors are often characterized by

• An ability to allow seniors as much independence as possible
• Possessing an optimistic outlook on life
• The ability to listen to what the senior is saying and what the senior means
• The ability to see the positive aspects of aging
• Possessing a degree of comfort in discussing death
• Having time to give on a regular basis

What needs exist in our community?

Community agencies are often the most knowledgeable about seniors. Consider contacting:

• Public welfare department
• Public health department
• Local hospitals
• United Way
• American Red Cross
• Social Security Administration
• County agencies on Aging
• State department of Senior services

Ask:

1. What services does your agency offer?
2. Who is eligible for these services?
3. What needs do you see that are not being met in the community?
4. Do you use volunteers?
5. Are there services that you could offer if there were volunteers available?

Also, consider a field trip to a nearby nursing home, observing the activities there and perhaps having a meal with the patients. If there is a day-care center in your community, spend the day there observing and talking with the members. Visit a seniors? activity meeting sponsored by the recreation department.

Contact other church groups in your community to discover what they are doing for and with senior adults.

A survey of your own church will identify retired persons who might be included in planning for ministering to and with seniors. Tap into skills that they have that might be resources in meeting needs of other senior adults.

Finally, do not overlook informal contacts such as neighbors and elderly members of their families as you seek to discover senior adults and learn about their needs.

What does a plan include?

The scale of your plan should reflect the number of volunteers on your team as well as the resources at your disposal. Plans generally fall into one of several categories:

Person-to-person activities such as visitation are among the most important, least expensive and hardest-to-get services for seniors. Friendly visitors alleviate loneliness and provide meaningful contact in the lives of senior adults. Consider other activities such as

• ?adopting? an individual or a couple,
• reading aloud to a senior,
• shopping or running errands,
• writing letters,
• providing transportation,
• being a telephone companion.

Each of these is an expression of caring and Christ?s love.

Nursing home ministries are best conducted in close cooperation with whomever is in charge at the facility. Consider

• onsite Bible study or weekly worship experiences,
• book mobile services,
• sing-alongs,
• special occasion parties,
• providing and playing board games, puzzles or cards.

Often the nursing home staff will have suggestions for activities that are popular with the residents.

Ongoing activitiesare characterized by the need for cooperation of a group of people.

Typical ministries might include

• barber and beauty services for the homebound,
• handyman referral service,
• onsite Bible classes and small prayer groups,
• homemaker service.

Group activities may occur in small groups, and have the potential for expansion to large group programs. Consider making recreation the focus of the small group.

• Camps and retreat programs,
• Clubs for seniors are of great interest. The club purpose can range from social to informational to demonstrations to trips to nearby points of interest, etc.

Senior Day Care consists of offering a program of activities that meet the needs and desires of senior adults. Such a ministry involves

• Securing space at a church or recreation center for one day each week,
• Enlisting volunteers with special skills to teach those skills.

Counseling senior adults demands availability rather than professional counseling credentials. Valuable to this ministry are

• Familiarity with agencies that can give specific information,
• Willingness to listen and care.

Ongoing Learning

Ministry with seniors is enhanced as those involved grow in their understanding of and commitment to the audience. Following are a few suggested subjects for training.

Psychological Aspects of Senior Adults

Community Services for Seniors

• Invite various speakers from the community based on topic/expertise (such as public assistance for aging, Social Security, Medicare, making a will, adult education for seniors, etc.)

Understanding Social Security and Medicare

• Invite an employee from Social Security office or a public welfare worker who works with the elderly to present information and convene a discussion.

Involving Seniors in the Total Community

• Invite a public health nurse, recreation leader, social worker, several seniors from the community, an employment service representative, etc. as outside experts.

Visiting Nursing Home residents

• Invite an administrator, nurse or social worker from a nursing home to provide information about nursing home culture and needs. Also a family member of a nursing home resident could be a resource person.

• Invite a pastor, social worker who works with the aging, or public health nurse who has special interest in the elderly to address this topic.
