Local mom fought cancer while pregnant

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A local breast cancer survivor worried that chemotherapy treatments would ruin her dream of having another child.

Rebecca Soulierre was on a family vacation in April 2007 when she first felt a lump in her breast.

?I was just laying on the beach, watching my kids swim and I had a shooting pain in my left breast and I just grabbed it because it hurt so bad, and that?s when I first felt the lump,? says Soulierre.

The 38-year-old says the lump was moveable and it hurt, which in her mind could not have been any reason to really worry.

"All the hallmark symptoms that they tell us to watch out for, for cancer, I had convinced myself that it wasn't any of those,? she tells FOX 25?s Nicole Jacobs.

So at age 33, Rebecca went on with her life as a working mother, but time passed and three months later she received unexpected news she and her husband always hoped to hear. They were having their third child.

Rebecca and her husband thought three was their magic number, but in the back of her mind was that lump. She decided to get tests done and soon an ultrasounds revealed what doctors called, ?something suspicious.?

"I guess I was in denial,? she recalls, ?I said to him, suspicious for what? I still couldn't get it through my head that I could have cancer."

Images and tests would manifest themselves in the worst way.

"Friday, August 31, 2007 at 7:30 at night, Dr. Quinlin called me and said that I had stage 2 breast cancer, and I was 14 weeks pregnant,? says Rebecca.

Soulierre became a part of the one in 3,000 pregnancies that are affected by breast cancer.

Dr. Bob Quinlin of UMass Memorial Medical Center cared for the expected mother who found herself in need of life-saving treatment.

"Chemotherapy, given during the second trimester, I would say is comparatively safe. We use it now, there are some drugs we do not use,? says Dr. Quinlin.

The joy of a new child was quickly dimmed by fear. Rebecca required chemotherapy and a lumpectomy over the course of several months to treat the breast cancer doctors considered aggressive.

Among Rebecca?s darkest days, she had one of her brightest. She gave birth to Reece Everest Soulierre on February 6, five weeks premature.

Reece is now four years old and a living reminder of Rebecca?s fight. The little girl?s parents both believe there is something to that lucky number three.

LONDON - Manchester City tightened its grip on top spot in the English Premier League on Saturday by registering a 13th straight home victory, easing past Blackburn 3-0.

City barely broke into a sweat at fortress Etihad Stadium to move provisionally five points clear of Manchester United, with Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko scoring in a routine victory.

United States defender Tim Ream made his league debut for Bolton at Chelsea but couldn't stop the home side as England midfielder Frank Lampard scored one goal and set up another in a 3-0 win. That ended Chelsea's miserable run of five straight winless games to move past Arsenal and provisional fourth place.

Arsenal hosts third-place Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday, when United visits Norwich.

City's solid home form is allowing it to challenge for its first English title since 1968. Not since Newcastle in 1996 has a team won as many successive home league games from the start of a season.

"People say being leader you have the pressure from those behind, but I think it is the opposite," City captain Vincent Kompany said.

A few years ago a colleague called me to tell me that she had very itchy skin and she was not sure what to do. It was the middle of the summer so dry skin was not the culprit. She also said that she did not feel exactly like herself, although she did not have any specific complaints. I told her to have her thyroid levels checked out. Sure enough, she had a problem with her thyroid and the itching went away when the thyroid hormone level was brought back to normal. She now thinks that I am brilliant! On a serious note, itching can be a dreadful experience. In addition to feeling uncomfortable, it can lead to exhaustion because it may keep you awake at night. People who see you scratching may not want to be near you. The scratched area can become infected. Don't despair because there is something that you can do. The following five questions may help you get to the cause of your itching.

Do you know if you have dry skin? Since dry skin is the most common cause of itching (particularly in the winter) and the most easily solved, it's important to determine if it is the case for you. Simply look down at your feet and legs (body areas that tend to be drier than others) and if the skin is an ashen or grey color, is flaky or scaly and if the skin lines are prominent, then you have your diagnosis, dry skin. The university students also reported their alcohol consumption and completed tasks in which they poured their "usual" drinks and what the government guidelines for maximum "unit" consumption on a daily and weekly basis.

Most respondents lacked the knowledge and skills required to drink in accordance with government guidelines. Participants' "usual" drinks were substantially larger than one unit, and participants tended to underestimate the unit content of drinks.

For 5 of the 7 items examining knowledge and guidelines, fewer than half of the respondents gave correct responses.

Although university students gave a significantly greater number of accurate estimates than did school students, only of their estimates were within plus or minus 10% of actual content. The majority of estimates were underestimates: 52% among school students; 65% among university students.

"Our results mean that people's reports of drinking patterns in research may lead to inaccurate estimates of the health effects of different levels of alcohol use," de Visser notes. "There may be a need for more and/or different alcohol education in schools and the media."

Opponents say state workers are pressured to attend pro-Putin rallies with a combination of threats and payments and that police exaggerate the size of the crowds while underestimating the size of opposition protests.

Sunday, a police official, cited by news agency Itar-Tass, said 150 cars had taken part in the protest calling for fair elections. Organizers, cited by liberal radio station Ekho Moskvy, said 2,000 had participated.

Bundled up against the cold, people stood on overpasses above Moscow's main thoroughfares in solidarity with the drivers, carrying placards that read: "For honest elections."

Sharing pictures on Twitter, protesters complained of closed streets and road works that appeared around the Kremlin on Sunday. Outside the Reuters office, municipal workers had piled snow on a main intersection and worked to remove it throughout the protest.

A similar protest was staged on January 29 when organizers said more than 3,000 motorists took part.

Mother of pearl tells a tale of ocean temperature, depth

Nacre -- or mother of pearl, scientists and artisans know, is one of nature's amazing utilitarian materials.

Produced by a multitude of mollusk species, nacre is widely used in jewelry and art. It is inlaid into musical instruments, furniture and decorative boxes. Fashioned into buttons, beads and a host of functional objects from pens to flatware, mother of pearl lends a lustrous iridescence to everyday objects.

In recent years, subjecting the material to the modern tools of scientific analysis, scientists have divined the fine points of nacre architecture and developed models to help explain its astonishing durability: 3,000 times more fracture resistant than the mineral from which it is made, aragonite.

Now, in a new report (Thursday, Feb. 16) in the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), scientists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison show that nacre can also be deployed in the interest of science as a hard-wired thermometer and pressure sensor, revealing both the temperature and ocean depth at which the material formed.

"We found a strong correlation between the temperature at which nacre was deposited during the life of the mollusk and water temperature," explains Pupa Gilbert, a UW-Madison professor of physics and chemistry and the senior author of the new JACS report. "All other (temperature) proxies are based on chemical analyses and the relative concentration of different elements or isotopes. This could be our first physical proxy, in which the microscopic structure of the material tells us the maximum temperature and maximum pressure at which the mollusk lived."

The new study was conducted using mother of pearl from modern mollusks, but Gilbert notes that nacre is widespread in the fossil record going back 450 million years. If the techniques used by the Wisconsin group can be applied to fossil nacre, scientists can begin to accurately reconstruct a global record of ancient environments and environmental change.

"If the correlation holds, we would have a thermometer that goes back in time, a paleothermometer of how hot or cold water temperatures were when the nacre formed," says Gilbert.

The material also holds a distinctive signature?the thickness of the nacre layers ? for the water depth at which the material was assembled by a mollusk, potentially providing even more insight into environmental conditions of the present and past.

"These are two independent parameters, measured by different aspects of nacre structure," the Wisconsin physicist explains. "The maximum temperature can be measured by how disordered the nacre crystal orientations are, while the maximum pressure can be taken from the thickness of the nacre layers."

Working with UW-Madison graduate student Ian C. Olson, the lead author of the JACS report, Gilbert subjected nacre from eight mollusk species from different environments to a technique capable of mapping the orientation of nacre crystals. From the different shells, they observed uneven thicknesses, widths and angles of the crystalline "bricks" that, together with an organic mortar, are laid down by the mollusk to form mother of pearl.

"We wondered why the shells were so different and concluded that the key parameters to test were the environmental ones, including maximum, minimum and mean annual temperatures as well as maximum and minimum water pressure, which depends on water depth," says Gilbert.

Comparing the structural maps of nacre from the different mollusks and environmental data from the places where the animals were collected, Olson, Gilbert and their collaborators found an extremely high correlation between the microscopic structural characteristics of their nacre specimens and the temperature and pressure data obtained from the various environments where they were collected.
