While it has long been rumoured that both Sony and Microsoft are planning new versions of their popular respective games console brands (PlayStation and Xbox), it seems as though the Japanese company are issuing their statement of intent to get their release in first.
It is rumoured that the release of a ?PlayStation 4? (said to be codenamed Orbis)?could arrive in time for Christmas 2013, with Sony said to have already notified games producers such as Ubisoft in order to have a key range of titles available to sell on launch day. The company have expressed that they are ?confident? of beating Microsoft to the shelves with an ?eighth generation console?, and obviously looking to avoid a repeat of the development process for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) which was due to release before the Xbox 360, but ended up coming out over a year after Microsoft?s effort.
Sony representative Jim Ryan had?last year?said of the rumours of a PS4: ?I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition [with the next PlayStation].?
While Nintendo have seemingly beaten both Sony and Microsoft with the end-of-2012 scheduled release of the new Wii U (the current Wii is notable for showing stronger sales figures (in some sections) than their better-known rivals), it will be the two high-powered consoles that is the key focus in the market over the coming years, and while little is known about the innovations that the PS4 may feature, the new Xbox has been a hot topic of discussion in recent times, with the latest rumours claiming again that the console will finally incorporate Blu-ray?disc support into one of their systems for the first time.
While?this contradics other claims that the new Xbox will not include?a disc drive (the first games console to do so, and powered entirely by downloadable content, if it is true), there could still be a heavy online focus for the ?Xbox 720?, as rumours suggest that the system (which is reported by the company to have six times the power of the Xbox?360, and comparable to ?two PC?s taped together?) would have a strong anti-piracy (and even anti ?pre-owned game?) stance, being set up to see the console only operate when connected to the internet.
Despite those potential setbacks for more traditional gaming (though good news for fans who like their system to be fully connected), more positive rumours for the planned new Xbox include a 4-6 core processor implemented (one of them taken up by a new version of Kinect), which would include?the ability to provide two services at once on the same screen. Are games consoles fast moving towards a final?peak standard, or will the developments in these products keep on coming?
