Combining MacDermot?s music with lyrics by distinguished playwright John Guare (Six Degrees of Separation,?The House of Blue Leaves), the production nicknamed ?Two Gents? won Tony Awards for both Best Musical and Best Book, beating out?Grease?and?Follies. Some of the best music of ?70s animates Shakespeare?s romantic comedy about two best friends, Proteus and Valentine, who fall in love with the same woman. All of Shakespeare?s trademark touches ? an escape to a forest, cross-dressing and, of course, his glorious language ? have been preserved and reframed with songs in a wide variety of styles. Now Emerson Stage, Emerson College?s student production company, brings this story of love, betrayal and unbridled passion to the glorious Cutler Majestic Theatre.
