An open letter, signed by 250 medical experts, have asked a Canadian doctor-turned-Conservative MP, Kellie Leitch, to put her medical responsibility above his political career to turn down Canada?s controversial asbestos industry.
The Conservative Party is the only federal party that supports the asbestos industry and therefore medical professionals demand Leitch to work against the asbestos industry.
The letter, signed by the Canadian and international signatories and approved by more than 20 organizations, read: ?We understand that doing the right thing may run counter to your political interests, however your ethical code of conduct as a medical doctor requires that you put the protection of health ahead of personal advantage, no matter what the circumstance?.
According to medical professionals, the majority of asbestos goods travels to poorer countries through ships and could become the reason for the spread of deadly diseases in those nations. Therefore, they have demanded Dr. Leitch to pull the plug on a sector.
Not only is this newly elected MP for the central Ontario a supporter of asbestos industry, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper is also a vocal supporter of Canada?s asbestos industry.
Where the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Public Health Association and World Health Organization have called for the ban on the usage of asbestos, it is expected Dr. Leitch would also understand the seriousness of the matter raised.
